Bemidji State snaps SMSU's two-game winning streak

MARSHALL, Minn.  – The Southwest Minnesota State soccer team's two game winning streak was snapped Sunday afternoon as the Mustangs fell to the Bemidji State Beavers 1-0. With the loss, the Mustangs dropped to 5-4 overall, 3-4 in NSIC play, while the Beavers improved to 7-2-1 overall, 6-1 in NSIC play.

In the first half, the Mustangs spent the majority of time on the Beavers' defensive side but couldn't convert on any of their three shot attempts. In the 24th minute, Danica Requejo lofted a free kick that would be passed from Autumn Hayes to Kendahl Fisher and finally to Kylee Nolan for a nice shot on goal but BSU's goalkeeper Sonja Barr made a great save on Nolan's shot to keep SMSU scoreless.

Another chance for SMSU came in the 32nd minute when Brittney Bravo made a great pass to teammate Miranda Cadena who was positioned in front of the net but Cadena couldn't convert as the shot hit the top of the crossbar and went out of play. Late in the half, BSU was awarded a free kick off of a late SMSU foul just outside the goalkeeper box. Tiffany VanHaaften would tap the free kick back to Carly Dietrich who blasted a shot from 20 yards out past Sonya Smith and into the top right hand corner of the net for the goal.

SMSU would have a number of chances in the second half including a barrage of shots in the last five minutes in attempts to tie the game up but no ball found the back of the net. The loss was the first loss SMSU has suffered at home all season as the Mustangs had won the previous three.

SMSU out-shot BSU in the contest 16-8 overall, including 13-4 in the second half. Sonya Smith played all 90 minutes as she made three saves while allowing the lone Beaver goal. The loss dropped Smith to 5-4 on the season.

The Mustangs will go on the road this weekend for a pair of tough NSIC match-ups against Winona State on Saturday, Oct. 6 at 1 p.m. and Upper Iowa on Sunday, Oct. 7. at 1 p.m.
