BOX SCORE
ABERDEEN, S.D. - Miranda Cadena scored in the 110th minute with 20 seconds remaining in the second overtime to give Southwest Minnesota State a dramatic 2-1 win over Northern State in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference action on Sunday. The goal gave Cadena her tenth goal of the season – she becomes the first Mustang to score double-digit goals in a single season since Joelle Dean in 2004.
Vanesa Corona got things going early for the Mustangs as she scored her third goal of the season, second this weekend, in the seventh minute with
Kendahl Fisher assisting on the goal. It was Fisher's ninth assist of the season – tying Nadia AbuAyed's all-time single-season record set in 2002.
The lead would not last long as the Wolves would tie the game in the 22nd minute when Allie Macdonald knocked in a goal off a NSU shot that hit the post and allowed her to scoop and score. The goal was Peterson's six of the season.
That would be the last time the two teams would score until the 110th minute when Cadena scored the game-winning goal. Cadena's game-winning goal versus Northern State sets the record for most game-winning goals (5) in SMSU single-season history. She broke her own record of four which she set last season. Cadena now has nine career game-winning goals in two seasons.
Just prior to the game-winning goal, goalkeeper
Brienna Dehkes made a game-saving play on one-on-one breakaway by Allie Macdonald. Macdonald was wide-open five yards in front of the net and Dehkes deflected the shot wide left for the save. With time at a premium in the second overtime, Dehkes and the defensive unit fended off a Wolves corner kick and ended up with a goal kick by Dehkes. Dehkes punted it up the field and Corona planted herself underneath the ball and made a quick head pass up the field to a streaking Cadena who completed the goal.
SMSU (13-1, 10-1 NSIC) will continue NSIC road action next weekend with games versus Concordia-St. Paul and No. 3 Minnesota State on Saturday and Sunday.
