FAYETTE, Iowa – Madie Edwards scored a penalty kick in the seventh minute to lift Upper Iowa to a 1-0 victory over Southwest Minnesota State in the opening round of the 2013 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference / US Bank tournament on Wednesday. UIU, the No. 4 seed will advance to the semifinal round and will play No. 1 Minnesota State on Friday.

Brienna Dehkes with a shot to the lower right corner of the net.
SMSU outshot UIU 21-14, including 10-3 on goal.
SMSU has now been held scoreless in its last four games – a streak that has eclipsed the 400-minute mark. SMSU last scored a goal in the 84th minute of the Mustangs' 3-0 win over Concordia-St. Paul on Oct. 26.
It was the first postseason appearance for SMSU since the 2007 season and the Mustangs now own an all-time NSIC tournament record of 7-16-1.
The Mustangs (14-3-2) will now hope for an at-large bid into the NCAA Central Region tournament. The selection show is set to air after the completion of all conference tournaments on Monday, Nov. 11 at 6:30 p.m. CT. The show can be viewed live at www.NCAA.com.
