MARSHALL, Minn. – Justine Hauck scored a pair of goals, while Brienna Dekhes made five saves to lead Southwest Minnesota State to a 2-0 victory over the University of Mary in women's college soccer on Sunday afternoon.
The Mustangs continue their historic start to the season and improve to 6-0 overall, 3-0 NSIC, while the Marauders drop to 1-4-1 overall, 1-1-1 NSIC. The victory also marked the 100th all-time for the SMSU soccer program since it began in 1996.
Despite playing the first half into a stiff south wind, SMSU was able to push across the game's first goal as Hauck buried a shot in the 16th minute to give SMSU a 1-0 lead into halftime.
The Mustangs had seven shots in the opening half, including four on goal. UMary finished the first half totaling five shots with four on goal.
With the wind to their back in the second half, the Mustangs took advantage in the early minutes as Hauck took a pass from
Kendahl Fisher and put the ball past UMary goalkeeper Shelby Buttron to give SMSU a 2-0 lead in the 48th minute.
The shutout was the second straight for Dehkes and her third this season. SMSU has outscored its opponents 14-3 this season.
SMSU ended the game with 17 shots, including nine on goal, while UMary had a total of six shots.
Southwest Minnesota State continues its five-game homestand next weekend taking on St. Cloud State on Saturday, Sept. 28, starting at 1 p.m., before concluding the weekend on Sunday, Sept. 29, facing Minnesota Duluth.
