KEARNEY, Neb. - Southwest Minnesota State upset No. 6 Fort Hays State 22-20 on Saturday at the Midwest Duals hosted by Nebraska-Kearney. SMSU defeated Newman University 37-6, but fell to No. 4 Nebraska-Kearney 31-6 earlier in the day. SMSU closed Saturday's action with a 30-15 win over Bethany (Kan.).
Justin Reinsma notched his 100th win of his career in SMSU's 31-6 loss to UNK. Reinsma went 4-0 on the day and has now won six straight.
In SMSU's 37-6 win over Newman, SMSU took eight of 10 bouts – highlighted by back-to-back pins from
Ethan Hildebrandt (141) and
Beau Buysse (149).
Micah Larson also recorded a pin in his 197-pound bout.
Justin Reinsma (133) and
Kyle Begin (165) were the only Mustangs to record victories in SMSU's 31-6 loss to No. 4 UNK. Reinsma's 4-3 decision over Ryan Bauer gave the Slayton, Minn., native his 100th career win. He joins just seven other wrestlers in SMSU history to reach the 100 win plateau.
Reinsma would equalize the score at four after
Antonio Meikel dropped a 9-0 major decision to open SMSU's dual with No. 6 Fort Hays State. SMSU tied the bout at seven after the 149-pound bout and at 13 after the 165-pound bout. SMSU and FHSU traded pins at 157 and 165 – Mitchell Mears (FHSU) pinned
Codie Lane (SMSU), while
Kyle Begin (SMSU) pinned Bradley Little (FHSU).
Jacob Begin gave SMSU its first lead of the dual as he defeated Josh Rodriquez by an 8-4 decision. The lead would not last long as FHSU took a 20-16 lead as
Andrew Rodas suffered a 16-8 major decision loss to Jon Inman and
Micah Larson fell 9-2 to Zack Grimes. FHSU forfeited the 285-pound bout to give SMSU six points and a 22-20 win.
In SMSU's dual versus Bethany College, Reinsma won his fourth bout of the day and sixth straight when he pinned Ty Koltemann at 2:12 to even the score at six. Hildebrandt made it back-to-back pins as he recorded a pin of his own at 2:24 over Colt Rogers. SMSU dropped consecutive decisions at 149 and 157, but
Kyle Begin gave SMSU its third pin of the dual at 7:21 in the overtime period.
Jacob Begin extended SMSU's lead to 24-12 with a pin of Matt Atwood at 4:22. Rodas and Wilson each won their bouts at 184 and 285, respectively to give SMSU a 30-15 win.
SMSU improves to 8-3 overall on the season and has won seven of the last eight.
