No. 7 SMSU continues streak with sweep over No. 24 Northern State

ABERDEEN, S.D. — No. 7 Southwest Minnesota State recorded its sixth consecutive sweep as the Mustangs defeated No. 24 Northern State Saturday afternoon at Wachs Arena by scores of 25-21, 25-17, 25-16.
 
Southwest Minnesota State (13-5, 6-2 NSIC) hit a season high .405 in the sweep. Northern State (12-6, 5-5 NSIC) hit finished hitting .252.
 
Eisha Oden led the Mustangs in hitting as she hit an outstanding .667 in the match with 14 kills. Kenzie Beekman added a team high 15 kills hitting .448 and also recording her sixth-double double. Oden hit a new season best in kills and attack percentage. Beekman improved her season high hitting percentage as well in the match.
 
Megan Larson tallied 29 assists in the sweep.
 
Set one was a battle as there were seven tie scores and six lead changes. Southwest Minnesota State trailed majority of the first set until an eight-point streak put the Mustangs up 23-19. SMSU closed off the first set 25-21.
 
In set two, SMSU started with a 5-1 lead and kept control the rest of the set, winning 25-17.
 
Eisha Oden and Abbey Thissen opened the third set with kills to start out on a 3-0 run. Northern State came back with four straight points to give the Wolves the lead. NSU did not keep the lead long as a six-point run gave the Mustangs the lead again. Southwest Minnesota State dominated the rest of the set and closed the match, 25-16.
 
Southwest Minnesota State will travel to Wayne, Neb., on Oct. 14 and then to Fayette, Iowa, on Oct. 17. Both matches are set to start at 7 p.m.
