SMSU suffers loss against MSU

MARSHALL, Minn.-
No. 5 Southwest Minnesota State suffered its first loss to Minnesota State since 2009 and in the PE Gym since 1998 as MSU defeated SMSU by scores of 25-14, 25-23, 20-25, 25-19.

SMSU (16-7, 11-4 NSIC) hit .161 in the match while MSU (14-8, 10-5 NSIC) Krista Hassing lead the Mavericks with 19 kills hitting .421.

Kenzie Beekman recorded her second double-double of the weekend as she tallied 13 kills and 10 digs. Sarah Parker added 12 kills while hitting .250. Megan Larson dished out 26 assists to power the offense while Emilee Gutzmer contributed 18. Whitney Burmeister recorded 19 digs in the contest.

Minnesota State started set one with authority as the Mavericks started on a 8-2 run and led the rest of the set.

Both teams traded points in the second set as there was a game-high seven tie scores and four lead changes. MSU went ahead in the set 20-15 but SMSU rallied to tie it up at 21-21 but fell short despite pulling within one late in the set.

The third set was much like the second as both team traded points until four-straight points put the Mustangs ahead, 17-16. SMSU kept control to force a fourth set, 25-20.

Minnesota State started the fourth set much like the first as the Mavericks jumped out early and kept the momentum the rest of the set to close it out, 25-19.

Southwest Minnesota State will travel to Sioux Falls on Tuesday to play the Cougars of Sioux Falls. Start time is 7 p.m. from the Stewart Center.
