SMSU looks to snap streak in Winona with final road game of the season

    THIS WEEK: Southwest Minnesota State University (2-7 NSIC, 1-4 NSIC South) will play on the road for the final time this season taking on Winona State University (4-5 NSIC, 1-4 NSIC South) on Saturday, Nov. 8, with kickoff slated for 1 p.m. at Maxwell Field. SMSU will not only be looking to snap a three-game losing streak since Oct. 11, but will also be trying to snap an 11-game losing streak in Winona. SMSU's last victory at WSU came on Nov. 7, 1992.

    A VICTORY FOR SMSU ON SATURDAY WOULD...:
    •Snap a three-game losing streak.
    •Be its first at Winona since Nov. 7, 1992, snapping an 11-game streak.
    •Give SMSU its first road win of the season.
    •Lift SMSU's all-time record to 179-299-5, including 117-205-5 in conference play.

    SMSU WITH 12TH TOUGHEST SCHEDULE: If it seems like Southwest Minnesota State has played an undefeated team or a team with a winning record each week this season--its because its almost true! SMSU has played two teams that are still undefeated this season, while seven of SMSU's nine opponents have a winning record through nine games. The Mustangs has played the 12th toughest schedule in Division II this season with their opponents combined winning percentage at .611. Winona State begins the week with the fourth toughest schedule in Division II.

    SMSU & GAME STORYLINES:
    •SMSU ranks fourth in the NSIC and 39th in Division II in third-down conversion percentage (43.9).
    •SMSU ranks third in the NSIC and 15th in Division II in fewest penalty yards per game (45.1).
    •SMSU ranks last in the NSIC in turnover margin and 159th in Division II.
    •SMSU, which had more than 35 minutes of time of possession in its previous two games versus Sioux Falls and Wayne State, was held to just 17:25 in the loss last week to Concordia-St. Paul.
    •SMSU ranks ninth in the NSIC in total offense, ninth in scoring offense, 13th in total defense and 14th in scoring defense.
    •Senior Tyler Tonderum ranks 21st among all active players in Division II with 2,818 career rushing yards.
    •Tonderum has rushed for more than 100 yards in the last two games.
    •Tonderum's 66-yard touchdown run versus Concordia-St. Paul is the longest play from scrimmage this season for SMSU.
    •Redshirt freshman Nate Huot set a career-high with 10 receptions versus Wayne State two weeks ago and also recorded his second career 100-yard plus receiving game.
    •Huot ranks 10th in the NSIC in receptions per game (5.0).
    •Junior Andrew McReynolds recorded his team-leading fourth interception versus Wayne State.
    •McReynolds ranks tied for fourth in the NSIC with four interceptions.
    •Senior Mike Wenk leads the NSIC in punting with a 45.5-yard average and ranks second in Division II.
    •Wenk booted a career-long 79-yard punt last week versus Concordia-St. Paul.
    •Wenk booted three field goals in the win over UMC in week two becoming the first SMSU kicker to make three field goals in a game since 2007.
    •Redshirt freshman Blake Gimbel served as the team's placekicker last week versus Concordia-St. Paul. Mike Wenk punted during the game, but was not able to kick off or attempt PATs due to an injury. Gimbel made two of three PATs and averaged 48.8 yards on four kickoffs.
    •Junior Jared Twedt ranks sixth in the NSIC with 87 tackles, while sophomore Casey Hertz is eighth with 81.
    •Twedt recorded a career-high 17 tackles versus Concordia-St. Paul.
    •Senior Charlie Kern ranks eighth in the NSIC in passing (233.0) and seventh in total offense (257.0).
    •Kern ranks first in school history in pass completion percentage (61.5).
    •Kern had his first 300-yard passing game of the season and also tied a career-high with five touchdown passes in the loss to Wayne State.
    •Junior defensive end AJ Page missed two games earlier this season with an injury.
    •Senior Jacob Levtzow has missed the last two games with an injury and may miss the remainder of the season.
    •SMSU has scored 30 or more points in 19 of its last 33 games dating back to the final game of the 2011 season.
    •SMSU's 56 points in week two versus Minnesota Crookston was its highest point total since scoring 63 versus South Dakota Tech in 2006.

    TONDERUM SET NEW MARK FOR 100-YARD GAMES: Senior Tyler Tonderum recorded his 12th career 100-yard rushing game last week in the loss to Concordia-St. Paul, setting a new school record. He previously held the mark with Zach Wysong (2006-09).

    TURNOVERS BITING IN 2014: Southwest Minnesota State has committed at least one turnover in each game this season and has committed two or more in eight of nine games. SMSU is minus-13 in turnover margin this season, ranking last in the NSIC and has been a plus in turnover ratio just once all season. A season ago, SMSU had four games were it didn't commit a turnover and finished plus-five for the season.
