SMSU defeats Minnesota State 31-9, first dual win over MSU since 1990-91

MARSHALL, Minn. –
Southwest Minnesota State used three pins  to defeat Minnesota State University 31-9 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference action on Saturday. The win was SMSU's first over MSU since the 1990-91 season.

With the win, SMSU improves to 10-4 overall, 4-1 in the NSIC. SMSU has now won 10 duals each of the last three seasons. The four NSIC dual wins is the most in school history since moving to the Division II level and NSIC in 2000. SMSU had won three NSIC duals each of the last three seasons.

Justin Reinsma recorded his fourth pin of the season to give SMSU a 6-3 lead after the 133 pound bout. The win extends Reinsma's winning streak to nine and improves his season record to 24-9.

SMSU scored an upset at 141 pounds when Ethan Hildebrandt defeated No. 8 Alphonso Vruno by decision 10-6. The win lifted SMSU's lead to 9-3.

SMSU picked up six more points in the 149 pound bout with Beau Buysse's second win by fall on the season. Buysse pinned Weston Droegemueller at 4:28.

Kyle Begin picked up SMSU's third and final pin of the dual at 165 pounds as he pinned Sawyer Hoffman at 2:56. It was Begin's team-leading 11th pin of the season. 

SMSU coasted by winning three of the final four bouts, including Jacob Begin's major decision over Darick Vancura at 174 pounds.

SMSU will look to build on its program high four NSIC dual wins next weekend when the Mustangs travel to St. Cloud State on Feb. 6, before returning to the PE Gym the following night to take on Northern State.
