MANKATO, Minn. - The Southwest Minnesota State University soccer team was defeated by No. 1 Grand Valley State (Mich.) Friday afternoon 3-1 in Mankato, Minn.
 
The Mustangs scored the first goal of the match that started from a corner kick from Miranda Cadena. Cadena went on to score her fourth goal of the season moments later.
 
Jenny Shaba and Gabriella Mencotti scored in the 20^th and 24^th minutes, respectively for Grand Valley State to take the lead at the half, 2-1.
 
Grand Valley State tacked on one more goal in the 83rd minute by Katie Bounds.
 
SMSU had four shots with two on goal. GVSU lead with 22 shots and 11 on goal.
 
Southwest Minnesota State (1-2) will return to the Schwan Regional Event Center on Sunday. The Mustangs will open Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play against Sioux Falls. Kickoff slated to be at 6 p.m.
