No. 8 SMSU closes road trip with victory over SCSU

ST. CLOUD, Minn.— No. 8 Southwest Minnesota State defeated St. Cloud State in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play this afternoon by scores of 25-19, 25-13, 25-23.
 
Abbey Thissen led SMSU with 13 kills hitting .611. Teammate Kenzie Beekman recorded a double-double as she contributed 12 kills hitting .393 and tallied 12 digs. Eisha Oden also added 3.5 blocks.
 
Megan Larson led in assists as she dished out 19 assists to help power the offense.
 
SMSU (7-4, 2-1 NSIC) hit .323 while recording 13 blocks as SCSU (7-4, 1-2 NSIC) hit just .098 in the match.
 
SMSU  started thingsoff right with a 13-7 lead in the first set. Kenzie Beekman floored six kills in the set to lead the Mustangs.
 
In set two, Southwest Minnesota State opened with a commanding 10-5 lead. The Mustangs continued to control the set closing it out, 25-13.
 
In the third set, St. Cloud battled to try and get some offense started as the Huskies kept it close and at one point took an 11-8 lead. There were 10 ties and 3 lead changes in the final set. SMSU finished out the match with a 25-23 win.
 
Southwest Minnesota State will return home to the PE Gym for a five-game home stand taking on Augustana on Tuesday, Sept. 23 at 7 p.m.
