SMSU volleyball closes weekend with win

ST. PAUL, Minn.—
No. 7 Southwest Minnesota State closed out the Concordia-St. Paul Classic sweeping Missouri S&T 3-0. SMSU won by scores of 25-18, 25-17, 26-24.
 
Abbey Thissen, Sarah Parker and Whitney Burmeister had a big match, combining for 31 kills for the Mustangs. Burmeister and Parker finished with hitting percentages over .400. Thissen tallied 11 kills and hit .233.
 
Emilee Gutzmer led the Mustangs in assists as the junior setter dished out 20 assists and also tailed eight digs. Teammate Megan Larson also contributed 17 assists.
 
SMSU finished the match with a .258 hitting percentage while holding MST to a .092 percentage.
 
SMSU was in control in set one, holding the lead the majority of the game. A kill by Abbey Thissen was the start of a four-point run for the Mustangs to close game one, 25-18.
 
The Mustangs jumped out to an 8-2 lead in set two and kept control the rest of the match, winning 25-17
 
Missouri S&T fought back in set three as 11 tie scores were recorded and six lead changes. MST led 20-22 late in the match, but not before SMSU answered with three straight points to regain the lead and went on to secure the match victory, 26-24.
 
Southwest Minnesota State concluded the Concordia-St. Paul Classic with a 2-2 record. The Mustangs will travel to Denver, Colo., to play No. 2 Tampa (Fla.) at the Premier Challenge Sept. 12.
