ST. PAUL - The No. 2 Southwest Minnesota State volleyball team's 15-match winning streak came to a halt Saturday night after No. 1 Concordia-St. Paul defeated the Mustangs 3-1 in the regular season finale at the Gangelhoff Center.
SMSU concluded the regular season 24-4 overall and 17-3 in the NSIC, while CSP won its 12th NSIC regular season title in the last 13 years after finishing 24-4 overall and an 18-2 mark in loop play.
The Mustang offense was held to a .140 hitting percentage, which marks the lowest since playing Ferris State on Sept. 12, earlier this season. Despite the struggles, four Mustangs hit double-digit kills, led by
Taylor Reiss with 13.
Abbey Thissen added 12 kills, while
Eisha Oden and
Claire Sames contributed 10 apiece.
Megan Larson was just shy of a double-double as she dished out 43 assist and grabbed nine digs.
The Golden Bears controlled the net as they racked up 13 blocks to the Mustangs' eight.
Whitney Burmeister led the team with 14 digs and
Kenzie Beekman had 10 saves. Reiss added to the defense with four blocks, while Larson and Oden added three and two, respectfully.
Southwest Minnesota State earned the second seed in the NSIC Tournament via a tiebreaker with Northern State. The Mustangs will host seventh seeded Augustana on Wednesday at 7 p.m. in the PE Gym.
