SMSU sweeps past Washburn in NCAA region quarterfinals

The No. 3 seed Southwest Minnesota State rolled past No. 6 seed Washburn University as it swept the Ichabods by scores of 25-16, 25-18, 25-13 in the quarterfinal round of the NCAA Central Region Tournament at the Gangelhoff Center.

SMSU (26-5) will face No. 7 Wayne State on Friday at 5 p.m., in the semifinals. WU finished the season 28-6.

The Mustangs' offense was dominant as it recorded four players with double-digit kills in the sweep. Taylor Reiss and Abbey Thissen led the attack with 12 kills apiece while both combined for just four errors. Sarah Parker added to the effort, flooring 11 kills, while not recording an error to finish at a .407 clip. Claire Same also added 10 kills while hitting over .300. Megan Larson primed the offense dishing out 44 assists, while also recording double-digit digs for her 12th double-double of the season.

SMSU's defense was also efficient in the match, as it held WU to a .120 hitting percentage to recorded its 21st time holding its opponent under a .200 mark this season. Whitney Burmeister grabbed 17 digs in the win, while Larson added 10.

Southwest Minnesota State will play tomorrow at 5:00 p.m., in the Gangelhoff Center against No. 7 seed Wayne State.
