Wolves blank Mustangs in conference opener

MARSHALL, Minn. — The Southwest Minnesota State softball team struggled to score a run as Northern State blanked the Mustangs 5-0 in the first game and 5-0 again in the second game on Saturday at Mustang Field. It was the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference opener for both teams.
 
NSU (15-10, 2-0 NSIC) started game one with a run in the second inning after a triple into right center scored a run.
 
SMSU (11-11, 0-2 NSIC) couldn't get anything started as neither team scored a run until the Wolves added to their lead with three runs in the fifth inning followed by one in the top of the seventh to close the scoring.
 
Alex O'Connor picked up her sixth loss after throwing a complete game and holds a 7-6 record. The sophomore gave up 11 hits and five runs while walking six batters and striking out two.
 
Megan Bunting and Elissa Reinsma finished 1 for 2 while Kailey Hanson, Madisson Chadwick and Alysse Luttman went 1 for 3 in the loss.
 
In the second game, the Wolves started the scoring first again in the third inning after a double down the left field line to give NSU the 1-0 lead.
 
Northern State added to the lead with another double in the inning to go up 2-0 after three innings.
 
The Wolves scored a run in the fourth and a pair of runs in the sixth to seal the 5-0 win.
 
Madisson Chadwick recorded the loss and is 2-3 so far this season. Chadwick gave up eight hits and five runs while walking three and striking out a batter.
 
Micki Williams lead the Mustangs in the second game finishing 2 for 3 from the plate while Luttmann finished 1 for 2.
 
Southwest Minnesota State will host MSU Moorhead tomorrow with the first pitch of the doubleheader at 12 p.m.
