Mustangs close weekend with sweep over Huskies

ST. CLOUD, Minn. —
The Southwest Minnesota State softball team earned a sweep against St. Cloud State with a 10-7 win in game one and followed by a 12-2 win in game two on Sunday.
 
SMSU (20-18, 9-7 NSIC) started the scoring for the Mustang in the first inning as SCSU walked in a run. The Mustang continued to score and led 3-1 after 2 1/2 innings.
 
SCSU (22-20, 8-10 NSIC) pulled together a big four-run third inning to lead 6-3 after three innings.
 
The Mustangs bounced back with five runs of their own in the fourth inning to regain an 8-6 lead.
 
The Huskies scored a run in the fourth to cut the lead to one, but SMSU added two runs in the seventh to cement a 10-7 victory.
 
Katelyn Kalkman scored three runs and finished 4 for 5 from the plate, while Madisson Chadwick tallied a team-high four RBIs and went 2 for 4.
 
Erin McDurmont earned her third win of the season after she came in after 2 1/3 innings to relieve Alex O'Connor. McDurmont hurled the remaining 4 2/3 innings, striking out four batters and giving up just one run.
 
The Mustangs finished with 12 hits and left nine batters on base.
 
In game two, the Mustangs again scored in the first inning, but the Huskies tied it up with a run in the bottom half of the inning.
 
SMSU scored a pair of runs after a couple SCSU errors to lead 3-1 going to the bottom of the fourth.
 
The Huskies scored a run in the fourth but the Mustangs opened up the scoring up in the sixth and seventh inning with nine unanswered runs to secure the 12-2 win and the first sweep over SCSU since 2011.
 
McDurmont (4-2) got the nod in the second game and pitched the complete game picking up her second win of the day. The freshman gave up five hits and just two runs (one earned), while striking out two batters and no walks.
 
Chadwick continued her success from the dish as she recorded another three RBIs while going 1 for 3. Kailey Hanson also drove in three runners while going 1 for 4 from the plate. Kalkman went 2 for 4 with three runs scored, while Taylor Koloc finished 3 for 4 with three runs scored.
 
Southwest Minnesota State will return to Mustang Field for a busy week of NSIC games, as the Mustangs face Augustana on Tuesday and Sioux Falls on Thursday, both starting at 2 p.m.
