WINONA, Minn. — The Southwest Minnesota State softball dropped a pair of games to No. 17 Winona State with an 8-0 loss in game one and 7-2 defeat in game two on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field.
Southwest Minnesota State is 25-25 overall and 14-14 in the NSIC heading into the final games of the regular season, while Winona State moves to 40-12 overall and 22-5 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference.
In game one, Winona State scored six runs in the second inning and added a run in the fourth and sixth innings to earn an 8-0 shut out after six innings.
Erin McDurmont (6-4) suffered the loss as she started the game and pitched 1 2/3 innings giving up five runs on three hits.
Alex O'Connor came in and pitched the last 3 2/3 innings and gave up three runs on six hits.
Katelyn Kalkman,
Alysse Luttmann and
Taylor Koloc all finished 2 for 3 from the plate.
In game two, the Mustangs scored first in the third inning after Kalkman pushed her hitting streak to 11 after an infield single that scored
Megan Bunting.
The Warriors came back in the bottom half of the third with seven runs to lead 7-2 after three frames.
SMSU scored a run in the fifth after
Kailey Hanson singled up the middle to score Kalkman, but the WSU would hold the Mustangs from scoring against to earn the sweep.
O'Connor (17-15) suffered the loss after starting and pitching 2 1/3 innings while giving up five runs on six hits. McDurmont came in and finished the 3 2/3 innings and gave up three hits and two runs.
Jazmyne Neely finished 2 for 3 from the dish while, Kalkman kept her hitting streak alive finishing 2 for 4 with an RBI and a run scored.
Southwest Minnesota State will travel to Upper Iowa tomorrow for the regular season doubleheader finale with the first pitch at noon.
