MARSHALL, Minn. - The Southwest Minnesota State soccer team (5-10-1, 4-8-1 NSIC) will wrap up its 2016 schedule this weekend with two more NSIC matches. The Mustangs will travel to Sioux Falls, S.D., for a Friday afternoon match against Augustana (9-4-3, 8-2-3 NSIC) at 3 p.m. SMSU will then head back to Marshall where they will host Wayne State (8-5-3, 5-5-3 NSIC) for Senior Day this Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. SMSU is looking to snap a two match losing streak after a tough pair of losses last weekend crushed its chances of qualifying for the conference tournament.
OPPONENTS AT A GLANCE:
Augustana—The Vikings enter this week ranked fourth in the NSIC standings and seventh in the central region after drawing with St. Cloud State and Minnesota Duluth last weekend and have now had three straight matches require extra time. Mackenzie Main scored the only two goals for Augustana last weekend while Samantha Tymkowicz leads the team in goals scored (5) for the year. Emily Jacobsen leads the Vikings with six assists helping the Vikings to a 29-19 scoring advantage over their opponents so far this year including a 22-9 scoring advantage in the second half of matches this year.
Wayne State—The Wildcats enter the weekend coming off of a 3-1 victory over St. Cloud State this past Sunday. The win gave Wayne State its most conference wins in a season (5) since the 2005 season. Wayne State is currently outscoring opponents 23 to 18 and has three players tied for the team lead in goals with four each. Goalkeeper, Kylie Comba, has recorded 81 saves with an 8-5-3 record and five shutouts.
SERIES HISTORY:
Augustana— Augustana currently leads the all-time series 13-4-1 which dates back to 2000, the first year of Augustana's women's soccer program. SMSU is 2-6 at home versus Augie and just 1-6-1 in road matches against the Vikings. This will mark the first time since 2013 that SMSU has played an unranked Augustana team and have gone 1-2 against the Vikings during that span. The last win for SMSU was a 2-1 home victory in November of the 2014 season.
Wayne State—SMSU is 13-9-3 all time versus Wayne State. Despite a 2-6-2 road record against the Wildcats, SMSU is 10-2-1 all time in games played in Marshall and haven't lost a home matchup since 2005. The Mustangs are 2-0-1 in the last three meetings including a 1-0 victory at home last season.
HEAD COACH:
Erin Kasmarik-Mallett is now in her second season as the head women's soccer coach at Southwest Minnesota State in 2016. She was named to the position on July 23, 215. Kasmarik-Mallet, the fifth women's soccer head coach at SMSU, posted the most wins (8) for a first year head coach in the program's history in 2015. She is now in her second season with an overall coaching record of 13-19-3.
HARTMANN AND HUDDLESTON LEADING THE WAY: Juniors
Amanda Hartmann and
Emily Huddleston are tied for the team lead with five goals and three assists and have each put up 18 shots on goal. Freshman
Alexandra Miskowiec is second on the squad in scoring with four goals and has tested goalkeepers with 12 shots on goal off of just 19 total shots.
SECOND HALF BLUES: Southwest Minnesota State has struggled in the second half this season when it comes to scoring. SMSU has been outscored 16-8 in the second half, compared to being outscored 16-12 in the first half.
OFFENSIVE OUTBURST: The Mustangs netted their second most goals of the year in their 4-1 victory over UMD on Oct. 16. In the win over UMD, SMSU hit the target with a season high 14 shots on goal. SMSU broke out of a scoreless streak in a big way in a 5-1 victory over U-Mary on Oct. 2. After suffering back-to-back shutouts versus Minnesota State and Minot State, SMSU scored a season-high five goals versus the Marauders. It was the first time SMSU scored five goals in a match since defeating St. Cloud State, 5-1 on Oct. 4, 2014.
MUSTANGS IN EXTRA TIME: Southwest Minnesota State is 2-0 in overtime matches this season following its 3-2 victory in extra time over Northern State on Sept. 18. Despite conceding game tying goals during regulation of those two matches, the Mustangs have shown resiliency with two game winners in overtime periods. This season now marks the first time the Mustangs have won multiple overtime matches since the 2006 season. SMSU has never posted three overtime wins in the program's 20-year history.
FOUR MUSTANGS RECORD NUMBER 1: A total of four different Mustangs scored their first goals of the season in a victory over U-Mary on Oct. 2.

STRIKING QUICK: The Mustangs have been able to get on the scoresheet early in four matches this season. SMSU took early 1-0 leads over Minnesota Duluth in the 13th minute on Oct. 16, Concordia-St. Paul in the 13th minute on Sept. 23, and also scored first versus Sioux Falls in the 12th minute on Sept. 9. SMSU scored in the eighth minute in the win over U-Mary on Oct. 2. The fastest goal in SMSU history was scored by
Miranda Cadena in 2014 just 23 seconds versus Augustana.
HISTORY LESSON: Southwest Minnesota State holds a 133-227-27 all-time record since it began competing in women's soccer in 1996. The Mustangs have a mark of 91-113-19 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference competition and have produced three winning seasons and one NCAA tournament appearance.
SENIOR DAY: The Mustangs will say farewell to four seniors this weekend.

Natalie Zobel will each play their final match for SMSU this Sunday versus Wayne State. Zobel has appeared in 46 matches as a Mustang while Giddings has appeared in 22 matches, scoring a game winning goal this year versus Washburn. Weyer-Coates is ninth all-time in minutes played (5,425) and games played (76) while Keppler has appeared in 69 matches during her four years at SMSU.
