Mustangs begin string of road matches with decisive win over SCSU

ST. CLOUD, Minn.—
The second ranked Southwest Minnesota State women's volleyball team briefly trailed early in the first set and never fell behind the rest of the way en route to its 14th consecutive win beating St. Cloud State, 25-15, 25-16, 25-12.
 
SMSU hit .410 as a unit and had a strong night defensively holding SCSU to .038 hitting with eight total blocks.
 
Megan Larson had 47 assists and Taylor Reiss had 13 kills and three blocks in the win while Amber Messner added 21 digs. Kaylee Burmeister had eight kills on .389 hitting while Sarah Parker added seven kills while Sarah Parker hit .429. Parker is currently sixth all-time in SMSU history in career hitting percentage (.315).
 
The Mustangs came out strong again winning their 19th opening set of the year 25-15 with the help of seven kills and three blocks from Taylor Reiss and 15 assists from Megan Larson to start the match.
 
SMSU jumped out to an 8-2 lead to start the second set and cruised to a 25-16 win. The Mustangs hit .500 as team in the second set and had four different players contribute three kills each during the set to help SMSU go up 2-0 in the match.
 
The third set was even more one sided as the first two as the Mustangs held SCSU to .061 hitting. Eisha Oden contributed eight of her 12 kills in the final frame and Brooke Borchardt also had a strong third set, adding six of her nine kills including the match point to give SMSU the victory.
 
The win is Southwest Minnesota State's 17th straight win over SCSU giving the Mustangs a 24-18 lead in the all-time series.
 
The Mustangs will now travel for a No.1 versus No. 2 showdown as they visit top ranked Minnesota Duluth tomorrow afternoon at 4 p.m.
