BOX SCORE
MARSHALL, Minn.—The Southwest Minnesota State women's soccer team snapped a three match losing streak with one of its best all-around performances of the season in a 4-1 victory over Wayne State at home.
SMSU saw most of the possession to start the first half and opened the scoring in the 26
th minute to go up 1-0.
Alexandra Miskowiec struck the net from twelve yards out off of a great ball played in by
Brenna Giddings who tallied her third assist of the season in her final match as a Mustang on Senior Day. The goal for Miskowiec was her fifth of the season and tied her for the team lead in goals scored at the time of the goal. The assist tied Giddings for the team lead in assists (3) as well.
The Mustangs continued to create quality scoring chances up until the final seconds of the first half putting up six shots in the final ten minutes, but were unable to find the net again as SMSU went into the halftime break holding onto the 1-0 advantage.
Holding onto a one goal lead,
Emily Huddleston found the ball at her feet in the 53
rd minute, turned and fired a shot into the top right corner of the net for a beautiful second goal of the day for SMSU to give the Mustangs a 2-0 advantage.
With the Mustangs seeing most of the run of play again in the second half, Huddleston led an attack and moving to her left, struck a shot with her left foot that was deflected by the keeper but still found the net to give SMSU a commanding 3-0 lead. Huddleston's two goals gave her a team leading seven goals on the season.
Less than two minutes later,
Emily Hofmann took advantage of a huge breakaway down the left side of the Mustangs' attack. Hofmann fired a shot from the left side of the penalty area that snuck into the near side of the Wayne State goal to all but salt the game away for SMSU who led 4-0 after Hofmann's second goal of the season.
Wayne State would find the net late in the match in the 85
th minute off of a corner, but it was too little too late as SMSU had already had the match well in hand which they would go on to win 4-1.
The win for SMSU (6-11-1, 5-9-1 NSIC) gives them a 14-9-3 lead in the all-time series with Wayne State (9-6-3, 6-6-3 NSIC). In another offensive outburst, SMSU notched a season high 19 shots and held a 12-6 advantage in shots on goal during the match.
SMSU will now look ahead to next season as they will finish just outside qualification for this year's NSIC conference tournament.
