MOORHEAD, Minn. - The Southwest Minnesota State wrestling team closed its Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference schedule with a 22-21 victory over MSU Moorhead. The match was tied 21-21 before a tiebreaker in total match points in favor of SMSU, 45-41, gave it the win.
MSUM (7-7, 2-5 NSIC) started the dual with a major decision and a fall to lead 10-0 early.
SMSU (8-10, 4-4 NSIC) picked up its first points of the match at 141 pounds, as
Cortez Arredondo recorded a 5-0 decision.
The Dragons pushed its lead to 18-3 with a pair of major decisions at 149 and 157 pounds.
Kegen Fingalsen started a three-bout run for the Mustangs with his sixth pin of the season at 4:10, followed by
Kyle Begin with a 17-1 tech. fall in 3:51 to trail the Dragons 18-14 with three bouts left.
Brody Goens tied the match up after a 11-3 major decision at 184 pounds.
MSUM took the lead a 197 with a 3-1 decision, before
Cole Wilson closed the dual with a 3-0 decision. Wilson-who is ranked No. 3 in the nation-finished the conference schedule 8-0.
Southwest Minnesota State will close its regular season schedule hosting Concordia Moorhead on Thursday at 7 p.m.
