Mustang wrestling closes regular season hosting Concordia Moorhead

MARSHALL, Minn. - The Southwest Minnesota State wrestling team will close its regular season schedule this Thursday as it hosts Concordia Moorhead at 7 p.m.

CATCHING UP WITH THE MUSTANGS - The Mustangs will enter the final week 8-10 overall, 4-4 in the NSIC, after recording a 1-1 record last weekend against No. 15 Minnesota State and MSU Moorhead. The Mustangs started the week suffering a 31-9 loss against No. 15 MSU, but bounced back with a hard-fought 22-21 victory to MSUM last Saturday. Against MSUM, the match was tied at 21-21 before a tiebreaker in total match points in favor of SMSU, 45-41, gave it the win. SMSU is ranked No. 12 in the latest Super Region III rankings. Cole Wilson (285) is ranked No. 1 in the region and third in the national poll.

CONCORDIA - The Cobbers-ranked No. 8 in NWCA DIII-will enter Thursday night's dual 14-5 overall and will be the final regular season dual. Jakob Stegeberg (125)-ranked No.3-will enter the dual on a seven-match win streak, while carrying a 29-7 record. Gabe Foltz (133) is ranked No. 7 in his class and carries an 23-4 record.

CONCORDIA HISTORY - Southwest Minnesota State will meet with Concordia-Moorhead for the 13th time in a series that started back in the 1992-93 season. SMSU holds an 8-4 series advantage, while tied 2-2 in matches in Marshall. SMSU has lost the last two duals in the series, with its last home win coming in the 2012-13 season.

STREAKS - Senior Cole Wilson finished the NSIC schedule with a 2-0 record last week against MSU and MSUM to remain undefeated in conference play this season. Wilson will start the week ranked No. 1 in the region, No. 3 in the nation and on a 14-bout win streak.

WRESTLER OF THE WEEK - With a pair of wins over two regionally ranked foes including an upset of the country's No. 1 wrestler, Southwest Minnesota State's Cole Wilson has been named the D2Wrestle National Wrestler of the Week, as announced last Thursday. This is the first time SMSU has received a National Wrestler of the Week honor.

Wilson was named Super Region III, NSIC Wrestler of the Week, as he recorded a 2-0 record this past weekend against No. 2 St. Cloud State and Minot State.
