MITCHELL, S.D. - The Southwest Minnesota State softball team was swept by Dakota Wesleyan in a non-conference doubleheader Tuesday afternoon at McWhirter Field. The Mustangs fell in game one, 3-2 before losing the second 6-2.
Alex O'Connor started in the circle for the Mustangs and hurled 4 2/3 innings before being relieved by
Athena Golling. Golling finished the game pitching 1 2/3 inning. The pair combined for seven hits, three strikeouts and two walks. Golling (2-4) suffered the loss.
SMSU combined for six hits, led by
Karmann Carroll who finished with two hits in four at bats.
Sam Flack and
Mackenzie Clouse each recorded an RBI for the Mustangs.
Southwest Minnesota State started the scoring in the third inning after Clouse doubled to score Flack. SMSU added a run in the fifth following a single by Flack to score
Sara DeSmet.
DWU knotted the game up a 2-2 in the bottom of the fifth after a double to center scored a pair of runs. The Tigers closed the first game with a walk-off double in the bottom of the seventh, which scored a run to secure the 3-2 win.
In game two,
Shelby Crank got the nod and pitched four innings before O'Connor returned to finish the final two innings. Crank gave up all 10 hits, while combined the two struck out four and walked two. Crank (0-4) recorded the loss.
The Mustangs tallied three hits in the second game, recorded by Clouse, Flack and Carroll, while the lone RBI was hit by Clouse.
SMSU scored in the first inning after Clouse doubled to score
Janae Annetts and later scored on a wild pitch to give the Mustangs a 2-0 advantage early.
DWU responded with a run in the bottom half of the first frame and took a 4-2 lead in the second after a double scored three runs. The Tigers added runs in the third and fifth innings to complete the sweep and earn the 6-2 victory.
Southwest Minnesota State (4-13) will open its' Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference schedule next week with a doubleheader at Sioux Falls on Tuesday, March 15, with the first pitch slated for 2 p.m.
