MARSHALL, Minn. — The Southwest Minnesota State finished the weekend splitting with Minnesota Duluth in NSIC softball on Sunday afternoon at Mustang Field. The Mustangs won game one 3-1, before dropping the final game 5-1.
Minnesota Duluth carries a 22-11 overall record and 11-5 in the NSIC, while SMSU is 14-21 overall and 10-8 in loop action.
The doubleheader was part a StrikeOut Cancer day to help raise funds and awareness to fight cancer. Fans were encouraged to donate for every strikeout the SMSU pitching staff recorded. All proceeds went to the Make a Wish Foundation. If you would like to donate, you can do so

Alex O'Connor (7-7) went the distance in game one picking up the win, after allowing just four hits and one run, while striking out eight batters.
Sam Flack led the Mustangs with a pair of hits—both extra bases—and two RBIs. SMSU tallied five hits and left four on base.
SMSU dominated the first game allowing just two hits through six innings, while taking a 3-0 lead.
Shelby Crank started the scoring in the second inning after reaching on a fielding error to score pinch runner
Jordyn Goldschmidt. The Mustangs scored again in the third and sixth innings following Flack's doubles scoring driving in a run.
Minnesota Duluth scored on a wild pitch in the seventh to score its only run of the game.
In game two, SMSU committed four errors as
Athena Golling (5-5) picked up the loss after pitching four innings. O'Connor came in and hurled the remaining three innings giving up a pair of hits and a run. Golling gave up seven hits and four runs (two earned), while striking out two batters.
SMSU tallied four hits and left five stranded as
Jazmyne Neely recorded the lone RBI in the loss.
SMSU struggled to put runners on base, as it had just one base runner via a walk through five innings. The Bulldogs built a 5-0 lead through the five frames and had a no-hitter going until Neely broke the drought in the bottom of the six with a single up the middle. SMSU failed to get a runner across in the inning, but avoided the shut out in the final inning after Neely hit a sac fly to left to score the lone run.
Southwest Minnesota State will travel to Augustana University on Tuesday for a doubleheader slated for 3 p.m.
