BEMIDJI, Minn. — The Southwest Minnesota State softball team suffered a sweep against Bemidji State Sunday afternoon. The Mustangs lost by scores of 2-0 in game one, before dropping the second, 3-2 after the Beavers scored two runs in the seventh to steal the win.
Southwest Minnesota State falls to 14-25, 10-12 in the NSIC, while Bemidji State improves to 27-15, 10-9 in the conference.
In the opening game,
Alex O'Connor went the distance and picked up the loss after giving up seven hits, two runs, while striking out six.
The Mustangs recorded five hits and left six on base, while the BSU pitching staff fanned 10 batters.
The Beavers scored the only runs of the game in the bottom of the first after a pair of singles put runners on base. The cleanup hitter doubled to scored the two runners and to take a 2-0 lead.
The Mustangs put a runner on in every inning but the last, but couldn't manage to bring it around to score as they fell 2-0.
In game two, O'Connor (8-13) started in the circle and suffered another loss after giving up 10 hits and three runs, while striking out seven.
SMSU notched six hits and left four on base, while the Beavers' pitcher struck out another 10 Mustangs.
Taylor Koloc and
Jazmyne Neely led SMSU with multiple hits, while
Sam Flack recorded a pair of RBIs.
BSU took the lead in the third inning after being hit by a pitch to walk in a run. The Mustangs took their first lead of the day in the sixth after Flack singled to score a pair of runners to lead 2-1. Bemidji State came back in the bottom of the seventh, starting off the inning with a pair of singles. O'Connor punched out the next two batters, but the next batter doubled to bring the two runners around to score and to steal the victory.
Southwest Minnesota State will face Minnesota Crookston tomorrow at noon.
