MANKATO, Minn. — Minnesota State's Coley Reis—NFCA DII National Pitcher of the Week—struck out a combined 19 batters as the Mavericks swept Southwest Minnesota State on Thursday afternoon in NSIC softball. MSU won by scores of 5-0 in game one, before taking game two, 3-2.
Southwest Minnesota State falls to 15-28, 11-15 in the NSIC, while Minnesota State improves to 37-12, 20-5 in the conference pushing its winning streak to six-straight.
Alex O'Connor started game one in the circle for the Mustangs and picked up the loss after hurling the complete game giving up 12 hits and five runs (four earned), while striking out three.
SMSU struggled to hit the ball as it recorded just one hit in the game after
Karmann Carroll broke up the no-hitter in the top of the fourth with a single to center. The inning was the only frame that the Mustangs did not go down in order.
The Mavericks took a one-run lead in the first, before adding to it in the second inning to hold a 4-0 advantage. MSU added an insurance run in the sixth to lockup a 5-0 victory in game one.
In game two,
Athena Golling went the distance picking up the loss after giving up eight hits and three runs (two earned), while striking out three.
SMSU combined for three hits as
Sam Flack,
Taylor Koloc and
Taylor Chavez all recorded one.
MSU again took an early lead in the first inning scoring three runs on multiple SMSU errors. SMSU looked to chip away at the deficit, as Flack hit a solo-home run—fourth of the season—to put the Mustangs on the board. Chavez helped the cause in the fifth with an infield single, which scored Koloc and to trail by one. SMSU had a runner on base in the top of the seventh, but could not move them to score.
Southwest Minnesota State will close out the regular season this weekend hosting Upper Iowa on Saturday, before the finale against Winona State on Sunday.
