SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — The No. 10 seeded Southwest Minnesota State softball team suffered a 6-2 loss to the No. 1 seed Minnesota State in the second round of the NSIC Tournament on Thursday night at Sherman Park.
Southwest Minnesota State will continue tournament action tomorrow against the winner of Wayne State/Sioux Falls at 10 a.m., tomorrow morning at Sherman Park.
Athena Golling was marked with the loss after pitching 2 1/3 innings allowing nine hits and five runs, before
Alex O'Connor came in to relieve her. O'Connor finished the game hurling 3 2/3 innings giving up three hits and one run, while striking out three.
MSU racked up 12 hits and six RBIs, while leave seven on base. SMSU finished with five hits, two RBIs and left five stranded.
Taylor Koloc and
Jazmyne Neely both recorded a pair of hits to lead the Mustangs, while Neely and
Mackenzie Clouse scored a run. Koloc also was effective on the bases, as she was 3 for 3 on stolen bases.
MSU started things off right away, as the lead off batter hit a home run in the first inning to grab a one-run lead. The Mavericks added to the lead in the second and third frames to jump out to a 5-0 advantage. SMSU got on the board in the top of the fifth after Clouse homered to right field to give the Mustangs their first run of the game. MSU responded with a run in the sixth to push the lead back to four. The Mustangs tried to cut the deficit in the final frame after
Jordyn Goldschmidt laid down the sac bunt to score Neely from third, but that is all SMSU would score as it fell 6-2.
