SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — The Southwest Minnesota State softball team took an early lead, but could not hang on as Minnesota Duluth defeated the Mustangs 5-4 in the NSIC Tournament Friday evening at Sherman Park. The Mustangs finish the season 19-33 overall.
 
Alex O'Connor started the game and pitch four innings allowing four hits on three runs, while striking out three batters. 
Athena Golling game in and hurled the final two innings and gave up three hits and two runs, while being marked with the loss.
 
SMSU generate six hits and four RBIs, as 
Karmann Carroll led the scoring with three runs batted in. 
Taylor Koloc moved around the bases recording a pair of stolen bags.
 
The Bulldogs took a 1-0 lead in the first inning, but that didn't last long as the Mustangs scored four runs in the fourth to take the lead. Carroll started the scoring off with a triple that would score three runs, followed by Koloc recording a single to score her from third.
 
UMD chipped away at SMSU's lead in the fourth, homering to left and scoring another run to trail by just a run. The Bulldogs retook the lead in the fifth on a two-run homer to hold a 5-4 advantage and smothered any kind of Mustang comeback in the final two innings to secure the win.
