MARSHALL, Minn. – The Southwest Minnesota State softball team split with the University of Mary on Sunday in Northern State Intercollegiate Conference softball. The Mustangs took the first game 4-1 before recorded the split with a 2-1 loss in the final game.
Alex O'Connor (5-7) recorded the win in game one after pitching the complete game and striking out, giving up four hits and striking out four.
SMSU tallied six hits, while stranding six. U-Mary recorded four hits and left six on base.
The Mustangs were led by Sam Flack and Janae Annetts who both notched a pair of hits, while Annetts scored two runs and Flack led with three RBIs.
Flack started the scoring in the first inning for the Mustangs after she hit a two-run homer to left field. SMSU held a two point advantage until Flack added to the lead with a single up the middle to score Victoria Brooks. Annetts also scored in the fifth on a double steal play to lead 4-0.
The Marauders scored their lone run in the top of the six on a home run to left center.
In game two, Shelby Crank (1-7) picked up the loss after throwing the complete game giving up nine hits and two runs, while striking out three.
SMSU finished with seven hits, led by Karmann Carroll led SMSU with two hits, including an extra base hit.
U-Mary took the lead in the third after a single scored a run. SMSU came back in the fifth and tied the game 1-1 following a home run by Taylor Koloc.
U-Mary put a runner on in the top of the seventh, before moving her to second on a single. The Maraders pushed the runners into the scoring position on a sac bunt. U-Mary took the lead on the next batter after ground out to the pitcher to score the winning run.
SMSU tried to rally in the bottom of the inning, but could not get a runner across.
Southwest Minnesota State will continue play at home, facing Wayne State on Wednesday starting at 2 p.m.
