SMSU soccer back on the road for two NSIC tests

The Southwest Minnesota State soccer team will be on the road again this weekend as its continues conference play on Saturday in Moorhead, Minn. against MSU Moorhead at 1 p.m. The Mustangs will then have a quick turnaround with a match on Sunday afternoon in Aberdeen, S.D. against Northern State at 1 p.m. SMSU won its only match last week in overtime, defeating Sioux Falls on the road 3-2 to improve thier overall record to 2-2 (1-0 NSIC).  Fabiana Peiro had the game winning goal and the first of her career in the Mustangs' win over Sioux Falls.

OPPONENTS AT A GLANCE:
MSU Moorhead—The MSU Moorhead Dragons (1-2-0) are in the midst of a five game home stand to open the season and are coming off of a 4-0 loss in their NSIC opener against Northern State. The Dragons went 1-1 in their two non-conference games to start the year, losing 1-0 to Minnesota Crookston and defeating Black Hills State 2-1. Head coach for the Dragons is Christie Chappell who is in her first season as MSU Moorhead's head coach after spending four seasons as an women's soccer assistant at Northern Illinois University.

Northern State—The Northern State Wolves have outscored opponents 19-2 through the first three games of the regular season. NSU has won all three games and enters this weekend off of a win in its first NSIC match of the year last Sunday, defeating MSU Moorhead 4-0 on the road. Head coach for the Wolves, Steve Kehm, has been at the helm since NSU's inaugural season of women's soccer in 1998, accumulating an overall coaching record of 179-143-35.

SERIES HISTORY:
MSU Moorhead—The Mustangs currently lead the all-time series against MSU Moorhead 12-10-3. SMSU has won the last four meetings by a combined score of 12-3 including a 4-1 victory last season in Moorhead. The Mustangs are 10-8-3 all-time in conference meetings with a 5-6-1 record in road games.

Northern State—SMSU currently leads the all time series with Northern State 12-10-2 but have dropped the last two matches both by a score of 1-0. Both teams are tied in conference duels at an all time record of 9-9-2.  The Mustangs are currently 3-6-2 all-time in games played in Aberdeen.

HEAD COACH: Erin Kasmarik-Mallett is now in her second season as the head women's soccer coach at Southwest Minnesota State in 2016. She was named to the position on July 23, 215. Kasmarik-Mallet, the fifth women's soccer head coach at SMSU, posted the most wins (8) for a first year head coach in the program's history in 2015. She began this season with an overall coaching record of 8-9-2.

ROAD TRIP: After beginning the year with three consecutive home matches, the Mustangs are now in the midst of a three match road stretch. SMSU enters this weekend's road trip with a 1-0 road record to begin the season following its victory in Sioux Falls last week. The Mustangs are a combined 18-13-2 in road matches since the start of the 2013 season.

MUSTANGS CAPTURE OVERTIME MAGIC: The Mustangs 3-2 victory in overtime against Sioux Falls last weekend was their first overtime win since 2014. SMSU was 0-2-2 last season and are 7-6-16 over the past ten seasons in overtime matches.

HISTORY LESSON: Southwest Minnesota State now holds a 130-219-26 all-time record since it began competing in women's soccer in 1996. The Mustangs have a mark of 88-105-18 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference compeitition and have produced three winning seasons and one NCAA tournament appearance.

UP NEXT: Southwest Minnesota State will return home to continue its 15-match NSIC schedule next week with a match against Concordia-St.Paul on Friday, Sept. 23, at 4 p.m. The Mustangs will then hit the road again when they travel to Mankato, Minn. to face Minnesota State on Sunday, Sept. 25, at 1 p.m.
