Mustangs open season with a pair of wins in the Lewis Invitational

ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – The fourth ranked Southwest Minnesota State volleyball team started the season with a pair of wins Friday in the Flyer Invitational hosted by Lewis University beating Michigan Tech 3-1 followed by another 3-1 win over No. 3 Palm Beach Atlantic (Fla).
 
SMSU vs Michigan Tech – SMSU opened its 2016 season with a win in four sets Friday morning as the Mustangs defeated Michigan Tech 25-11, 25-27, 25-22, 25-15.
 
Taylor Reiss had 18 kills and Eisha Oden added 16 kills leading the Mustangs' attack alongside Megan Larson's 51 assists. Sarah Parker also contributed to the Mustangs' offense by hitting .522 with 13 kills.
 
Amber Messner led the team with 17 digs in her first career match for SMSU helping the Mustangs begin their regular season 1-0. The loss drops Michigan Tech to 0-2.
 
SMSU vs No. 3 Palm Beach Atlantic – The Mustangs continued to build off their winning start to the season by defeating the NCAA tournament runners-up from 2015, No. 3 Palm Beach Atlantic (Fla). SMSU starts the season off 2-0 after beating PBA 25-19, 23-25, 25-16, 25-18.
 
Taylor Reiss led the Mustangs in kills (21) for the second straight game hitting .362 while Eisha Oden added 15 kills and a hitting percentage of .393. Junior setter, Megan Larson, recorded her first double-double of the year with 52 assists and 14 digs.
 
Freshman Erin Corrigan contributed 18 digs while Amber Messner followed up her solid Mustangs debut with another 22 digs in game two.
 
SMSU will return to the court tomorrow morning to play the hosts, No. 18 Lewis (Ill.), at 11:30 a.m. followed by a meeting with Wisconsin-Parkside at 5 p.m.
