THIS WEEK: Southwest Minnesota State University (3-1 NSIC) opens NSIC South Division play this Saturday, Oct. 1, hosting Upper Iowa University (1-3 NSIC) for SMSU's annual homecoming game. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. at Mattke Field at the Schwan Regional Event Center. SMSU is seeking its third straight victory and looking to begin division play 1-0 for the first time since 2009. UIU captured its first victory of the season last Saturday with a 35-7 win at home versus Minot State.

A VICTORY FOR SMSU ON SATURDAY WOULD...:
•Be its ninth straight win over Upper Iowa.
•Be its first to begin NSIC South Division play since beating Upper Iowa in 2009. SMSU has lost six straight South Division opening games since 2010.
•Give SMSU a 4-1 overall record for the second straight season.
    •Lift SMSU's all-time record to 191-304-5, including 129-210-5 in conference play.

MUSTANGS ON HOMECOMING: Southwest Minnesota State is 21-25 all-time on homecoming, including winning two straight and three of the last four homecoming games. SMSU is 5-11 on homecoming since 2000.

1990 TEAM HONORED ON SATURDAY: As part of the newly formed "Legacy Club", the SMSU football program will be honoring the 1990 team at halftime of Saturday's game. Under the direction of head coach Gary Buer, the team captured the program's first and only conference championship and advanced to the NAIA playoffs for just the second time in team history. The squad finished 8-3 overall and won the Northern Intercollegiate Conference (NIC) championship with a 5-1 record. SMSU, which was ranked fifth in the final NAIA Division I national poll, lost to Carson-Newman (Tenn.) in the quarterfinals of the NAIA playoffs.

SMSU IN THE SOUTH: The NSIC adapted divisional play prior to the 2008 season. SMSU is a combined 20-32 all-time in South Division games and has finished in the top half of the division just once in eight seasons. SMSU had its highest finish in 2013 at second place, but has finished fourth three times, fifth once and sixth three times.

THE HEAD COACH: Cory Sauter is in his seventh season as head coach at Southwest Minnesota State and has an overall record of 32-39, including 31-37 in conference games. The 32 victories ranks second all-time among 10 head coaches in program history. Gary Buer (1979-92) is the program leader with 70 victories. Sauter was named head coach on March 29, 2010, after serving two seasons as an assistant coach at SMSU. In 2009, Sauter served as the team's offensive coordinator, while in 2008 he served as quarterbacks coach. A complete bio on coach Sauter can be found on page 23.

He is the fourth player in team history to reach the mark, joining Rich Froemling (1974), Robert Lipsey (1990) and Thomas Durham (2004).

SMSU HIGH-OCTANE OFFENSE: Since being shutout on Nov. 5, 2011, Southwest Minnesota State has scored 30 or more points in 30 of its last 50 games dating back to the final game of the 2011 season. SMSU has reached 40 points 17 times, 50 points seven times and 60 points once, since Nov. 12, 2011.

BIG PLAYS TWO WEEKS AGO: Two of SMSU's longest three offensive plays of the season occurred two weeks ago in the victory over U-Mary. The season's longest play came in the fourth quarter as Connor Wilkie connected on a 58-yard touchdown pass to Quadri Busari, while earlier in the quarter Max Simmons ripped off the season's second longest rush with a 55-yard touchdown.

NO TIME OF POSSESSION? NO PROBLEM: Southwest Minnesota State begins the week ranked 167th out of 169 teams in Division II in time of possession. Despite averaging the ball just 24 minutes and 50 seconds through four games, SMSU ranks 11th nationally in first downs, 12th in scoring and 14th in total offense. SMSU failed to score on two of six trips in the red zone and is now 17 of 19 with nine passing and eight rushing touchdowns.

U-MARY PASSING HELD IN CHECK: The SMSU defense limited U-Mary to just 85 passing yards on 19 attempts in a week three victory. It was the first time since Oct. 4, 2014, (Minnesota State, 66 yards) that SMSU held a team to less than 100 yards passing in a game.

FRESHMAN REACHES CENTURY MARK AGAIN: Freshman Max Simmons--one of three true freshman to play this season for SMSU--has rushed for more than 100 yards in the last two games with a combined six touchdowns. He made his first career start versus U-Mary in week three and rushed for 101 yards and two touchdowns, while he gained 112 yards and four touchdowns at Minnesota Crookston in week four.

DUO REACH 100-YARDS RUSHING: Senior Divonte Beale and freshman Max Simmons both reached 100 yards rushing in the victory over U-Mary in week three. Beale amassed 164 yards on 27 carries, while Simmons finished with 101 on 13 attempts. It's the first time SMSU had a pair of players reach 100 yards in a single-game since last season's finale versus Winona State.

DEFENSIVE SCORES: The Southwest Minnesota State defense has recorded a pair of touchdowns through four weeks. Sophomore Chance Steward returned a fumble 50 yards for a touchdown at Northern State in week two, while senior Tyler Flud had a 48-yard interception return for a score in week four at Minnesota Crookston. Flud's interception return for a touchdown was SMSU's first since Daryl Thomas had a 27-yard touchdown return at Minnesota State in 2014.

GERMAIN ALL GAME AGAIN: Senior linebacker Gene Germain has led the team in tackles in all four games this season and has amassed a team-high 39 for the season. He set a career-high with 12 tackles, including five solo stops in SMSU's win over Minnesota Duluth in week one.

He then caught eight passes for 96 yards and also had one rush for 10 yards in the loss at Northern State in week two.

2016 TEAM CAPTAINS: Four players, two on offense and two on defense, have been named team captains for the 2016 season. The team captains were selected by a vote of the Mustang players. The offensive team captains selected were senior tackle Grant Greenfield and junior quarterback Blake Gimbel. The defensive team captains named were senior linebacker Tyler Flud and senior cornerback Dallin Finley. It's the second straight season Gimbel and Flud have been selected a team captain.

HUOT CONTINUES TREND: Junior wide receiver Nate Huot, who led the team in receptions, yards and touchdowns in 2015, has continued his fine play into the 2016 season.
