MARSHALL, Minn.- Brooke Borchardt tied for the team lead with 12 kills on 13 attacks (.923) as No. 2 Southwest Minnesota State (18-1, 10-1 NSIC) rolled the University of Mary, 25-14, 25-18, 25-15 in straight sets on Saturday afternoon in the PE Gym.
Borchardt also added two block assists and one solo block to help SMSU tally up a total of nine blocks in the win.
Sarina Smith finished the match with a team high six blocks in the match as seven different SMSU players had at least one block. Smith also added eight kills with a .615 attack percentage.
Taylor Reiss also tied for the team lead with 12 kills and a .385 hitting percentage while also adding two block assists.
Mustangs' libero,
Dani Potter, finished with double-digit digs for a fourth straight match with her 11 digs on the afternoon to lead the team.
SMSU controlled the match from the first serve for a second straight match as the Mustangs raced out to a 10-3 lead in set one. The Mustangs held set point at 24-12 with the help of separate 5-1 and 6-1 runs.
Following back-to-back U-Mary points at set point, a Marauders service error put the Mustangs ahead 1-0 with a 25-14 win to start the match.
After finishing with a .444 attack percentage in set one, the Mustangs offense was held to a .216 hitting percentage in the second game. Set two was tight at the end with SMSU leading by only one at 18-17, but the Mustangs would take control and end the set with a 7-1 run to win 25-18, taking a 2-0 lead in the process.
SMSU took a 10-4 lead to begin the third set and never trailed in the final game as the Mustangs finished with a match-best .469 hitting percentage as a team.
SMSU, which has still never lost a match to U-Mary, has only dropped two sets in 18 matches against the Marauders and has now swept 11 of 19 matches this season.
The Mustangs will be on the road next weekend as they travel to face Winona State and Upper Iowa on Friday and Saturday respectively.
