Augustana pulls away from SMSU with second half goals

Box Score
MARSHALL, Minn.- Southwest Minnestoa State held Augustana off of the score sheet through the first 45 minutes, but the Vikings pulled away in the second half with two goals in less than two minutes in a 3-0 win over SMSU on Sunday afternoon at the Schwan Regional Event Center.

The Mustangs faced seven Augustana corner kicks in the first half but held the Vikings out of their goal and even looked like taking the lead at times with four shots towards the Augie net in the first 45 minutes.

SMSU honored its five senior players pregame as they played in their final match for the Mustangs. All five seniors started the match for SMSU and Emily Huddleston played all 90 minutes and led their offense with six total shots including three on target.

Amanda Hartmann had one shot towards the Augie net on the afternoon and Fabiana Peiro just missed an opportunity on a rebound to pull on goal back for SMSU.

Jenna Meyer started in net for SMSU and had three saves while playing the full 90 minutes as the Mustangs' goalkeeper. Taylor Machacek was credited with the win in the net for Augustana moving her record to 12-2-4 on the season.

Just under three minutes into the second half, after a scoreless first half, Ellie Knowles dribbled into the Mustangs' penalty with little pressure and drilled a hard shot to the bottom left of Jenna Meyer's net to give Augustana a 1-0 lead. 81 seconds later, Reiley Klose put home a 50th minute goal when a ball from Courtney Almendinger made its way past Meyer and onto the foot of Klose.

Holding onto the 2-0 lead, Augustana found the net again as Knowles put a low cross into Samantha Tymkowicz who buried the ball into the SMSU net to give Augustana a 3-0 lead.

The Mustangs will look now look ahead to spring practices in preparation for the 2018 season as the loss concludes their 2017 campaign.
