Mustangs rebound with four-set win over USF

MARSHALL, Minn.- Taylor Reiss notched her fourth 20-20 match of the season with 23 kills and 20 digs in a 25-23, 22-25, 25-21, 25-14 win for Southwest Minnesota State (22-2, 14-2 NSIC) over Sioux Falls (13-8, 8-8 NSIC) on Tuesday night in the PE Gym.

Reiss added two block assists and had 53 total attacks on the evening as she finished with a .340 hitting percentage and has now hit at least. 300 in six of the last seven matches for SMSU.

Kaylee Burmeister had her 11th double-double of the season with 16 kills and 12 digs on top of two total blocks while setter, Megan Larson, finished with 55 assists, two block assists and three kills in the win.

Brooke Borchardt contributed 11 kills and three total blocks while the Mustangs' other middle blocker, Sarina Smith, had 10 kills and four block assists with a .556 hitting percentage.

SMSU, which ranked second in the NSIC in team hitting percentage and first in opponent hitting percentage entering Tuesday's match, finished with a .318 attack percentage while holding Sioux Falls to a .230 attack percentage. SMSU has finished with at least a .300 hitting percentage in six of the last seven matches.

After committing a season-high 17 serving errors in the first match of the season against USF, SMSU came back with nine service aces in Tuesday night's win including three aces from both Taylor Reiss and Kaylee Burmeister.

SMSU finished the match with eight total blocks as a team while USF finished the night with nine blocks.

The Mustangs offense racked up 18 total kills in the first set which was tight throughout and saw nine total tied scores. SMSU was able to edge out a two-point lead at 23-21 off of back-to-back attack errors from USF that forced a timeout from the visitors. The Cougars were able to get one point back before a kill from Reiss ended the set at 25-23.

SMSU tallied up another 17 kills with a .342 attack percentage as a team in set two, however, USF went on a late 5-2 run to give the Cougars set point. SMSU fought off one set point before eventually falling in the second game 25-22.

It was SMSU that found a late run in game three as the Mustangs' 7-0 run gave them set point at 24-17. The Cougars then won four straight points to stay alive before Reiss grabbed her third kill in the third game to put SMSU ahead 2-1 in the match.

SMSU hit .538 in a fourth set that it never trailed in and ended the match on an 8-2 run as Caedyn Reinhardt grabbed back-to-back kills to give the Mustangs their seventh home win of the season.

Southwest Minnesota State will now make its final NSIC road trip of the season as it faces No. 9 Minnesota Duluth on Friday night at 6 p.m., followed by a match at St. Cloud State on Saturday at 2 p.m.
