Mustangs look to snap losing skid in two more weekend matches

MARSHALL, Minn.- Southwest Minnesota State will look to snap its current losing skid this weekend as they prepare to host Upper Iowa on Friday beginning at 5 p.m., before hitting the road to take on Winona State on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m.
 

SMSU Quick Hits

- SMSU will play a home and away match this weekend as it hosts Upper Iowa on Friday followed by a match at Winona State on Sunday

- SMSU has used two different keepers this year, splitting time between sophomore Jessica Craigmile and Jenna Meyer 

- The Mustangs are the beneficiaries of ample senior leadership on this year's team as Fabiana Piero and Emily Huddleston have combined for two of the Mustangs three goals on the season while Huddleston leads the team in total shots and Piero holds the team lead in shots on goal 

- SMSU soccer played its first season in 1996 and holds an all-time record of 134-235-27 overall with a conference record of 92-121-19

    Series History

- Upper Iowa leads the all-time series 8-3-2

- SMSU dropped last seasons match, 2-0 on the road in Fayette, Iowa

- The Mustangs last win in the series was a 1-0 win in 2015

- The two teams have been forced into overtime on three different occasions with Upper Iowa grabbing the only OT win in the series

- The biggest win for SMSU in the series was a 3-1 win back in 2007

- Overall Record: 1-7-1

- Road Record: 1-3-1

- Current Streak: Lost 4

- Was outshot 14-6 in the 3-0 loss to St. Cloud State last Friday afternoon

- Played one of their better games on Sunday vs. Minnesota Duluth, but fell in overtime 2-1 for their fourth straight loss

- Sunday's loss was just the second time this season UIU scored in a defeat

- Goalkeeper Caila Petrie tallied 9 saves over the weekend

- Charlotte Ryan scored the lone UIU goal, when she sent a corner kick from the left side in the net for her first goal of the year

- Goalkeeper, Caila Petrie, has played in net for the Peacocks in all but 19 minutes of game action this year with a record of 1-7-1 and one shutout


Winona State: Match Preview

    Series History

- SMSU has never beaten Winona State as the Warriors hold a 29-0-3 all-time record against the Mustangs

- SMSU is 0-20-2 all-time in conference matches against Winona State

- The Mustangs are 0-15-1 all-time in road matches at Winona State

    Winona State Team Notes

- Overall Record: 5-4-1

- Home Record: 4-2-1

- Current Streak: Won 2

- Winona State won a pair of one-goal road matches last week over Minnesota Duluth and St. Cloud State

- Winona State will play at Sioux Falls on Friday afternoon before returning to play SMSU at home on Sunday

- Won back-to-back games for the first time this season and have won three of last four

- Recorded third shutout of the season and allowed just one goal over the weekend

- Rachel Oleson recorded 16 saves over the weekend, allowing just one goal and posting her 26th career shutout

- Courtney Wiencek scored a goal in each game over the weekend and leads the team with nine total points on the year

- Wiencek and Abby Bohanski are tied for the team lead in goals scored with four each

 

Between the Posts

- SMSU has split time in net between sophomore goalkeeper, Jessica Craigmile (0-5-0), and true freshman, Jenna Meyer (0-4-0)

- The 2017 SMSU roster features four total seniors: Emily Huddleston, Amanda Hartmann, Fabiana Peiro, and McKenna Peters

- Midfielder, Fabiana Peiro, scored the Mustangs first goal of the season in the 14th minute against Northern State

- Peiro leads the Mustangs with six shots on goal

- Forward, Emily Huddleston, leads the team with 19 total shots

- Amanda Hartmann is second on the team with 15 shot attempts

 

Quality Over Quantity

- SMSU has struggled to win possession battles at time this season, but has created fair share of quality scoring chances when they have had the ball
