MARSHALL, Minn.- Kayle Burmeister had 11 kills on just 13 swings as the fourth-ranked Southwest Minnesota State (25-3, 17-3 NSIC) hit .541 as a team in a 25-12, 25-13, 25-15 sweep over Bemidji State (3-26, 0-20 NSIC) on Saturday in the PE Gym.
Burmeister added six digs and two service aces in the win while
Taylor Reiss also had 11 kills with a .500 attack percentage.
Brooke Borchardt had seven kills on ten attacks and
Sarina Smith added eight kills on just 12 total swings in addition to three block assists.
Megan Larson had 42 assists and eight digs for SMSU and
Caedyn Reinhardt fell just one kill shy of her season high with seven kills on 10 attacks with no errors (.700).
SMSU held a lead through both the entire first and second sets as the Beavers were unable to keep up with the Mustangs' attack. For a second consecutive match, SMSU did not allow double-digit kills from its opponent in a single set.
The Mustangs racked up 18 kills of their own with a .654 hitting percentage in set one.
Brooke Borchardt, who had seven kills on her first seven swings, had four kills on four attacks in the opening set while Reiss also contributed four kills to help SMSU to a 25-12 win.
SMSU forced another early timeout from Bemidji State in set two by jumping out to a 7-2 lead to begin the set. After one BSU kills out of the timeout, SMSU went on a 13-3 run to take a commanding 21-6 advantage, forcing a second Beavers' timeout. Following a short 6-1 run from Bemidji State, SMSU closed out the second set with kills from Reiss, Larson and Smith.
Early in set three, SMSU led by just one at 8-7 following a Mustangs' serving error. The Mustangs would take control again from there with an 9-0 run to go ahead 17-7.
Taylor Reiss added five of her kills early in the set as Head Coach,
Terry Culhane, began utilizing his bench towards the end of the match.
Jenna Walczak came on for her first action of the night in the third and added five kills on just eight attacks to help the Mustangs to a 25-15 win to close out the sweep.
SMSU will now begin postseason play hosting the quarterfinal round of the NSIC Tournament on Wednesday night in the PE Gym. The Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference will release the tournament bracket at the conclusion of Saturday's matches.
