SMSU wrestling to face Concordia College in regular season finale

MARSHALL, Minn.- The Southwest Minnesota State wrestling team (7-13, 3-5 NSIC) will compete in its final dual of the season this week when it travels to Concordia College in Moorhead, Minn., on Thursday at 7 p.m.

SMSU vs. Concordia College (10-7), Feb. 16, 7 p.m., Memorial Auditorium

ABOUT CONCORDIA COLLEGE:
The Cobbers won eight straight individual matches on their way to beating St. Olaf 43-12 last week to earn their 10th dual win of the season. Concordia has now recorded 10 dual-meet wins in each of the past four seasons. The Cobbers are 53-22 in dual meets over the past four years.  Adam Presler's forfeit win last week at 141 increased his team-leading win total for the year. Presler is now 22-14 for the season. Cole Sladek is one of two Cobbers to be ranked in the latest NWCA national rankings. Sladek is No.6 at 157 and is now 13-1 on the season with 10 bonus point wins this year.

SERIES HISTORY:
SMSU is 8-5 all-time against Concordia College but the Cobbers have won the last three duals including an 18-16 victory last season in Marshall. The last win for the Mustangs was a 21-16 victory during the 2012-13 season.

SMSU HEAD COACH: 
Jesse Nelson is in his 10th season as head coach at SMSU in 2016-17. Nelson was named the fourth coach in the program history on Aug. 22, 2007. Nelson, the 2013-14 NSIC Coach of the Year, has a dual record of 61-74-1, including 22-42 in conference matches. During his tenure, Nelson has groomed 19 national qualifiers—11 in the last three seasons alone—seven All-NSIC wrestlers, including three two-time NCAA qualifiers and three three-time NCAA qualifiers.

SEASON LEADERS:
Kegen Fingalsen is 20-14 (6-2 NSIC) with three pins and three major decisions... Cole Hennen is 19-11 (5-3 NSIC) with eight tech falls, three pins, and two major decisions... Cortez Arredondo is 17-16 with two pins, three tech falls and one major decision ... Jackson Ryan has posted a 15-11 mark with four pins and five major decisions. 

LAST TIME OUT:
Southwest Minnesota State could never recover after dropping the first three bouts of the day as Minnesota State Moorhead (5-9, 2-5 NSIC) defeated SMSU, 23-13 on Saturday afternoon in the PE Gym. 

Taylor Curtis lost a tight bout to begin the day as Jared Goldsmith put MSU Moorhead on the board first with a sudden victory. Cortez Arredondo won by sudden victory at 149 to give SMSU its first win of the day but Isaac Novacek followed up with a major decision at 157 to make the Dragons' lead 17-3. Jake Slocum and Cole Hennen both won decisions to help the Mustangs slowly climb back into the match.

Jackson Ryan won by a 13-2 major decision at 197 to give SMSU a chance going into the 285 bout, but Nader Abdullatif won by fall in 58 seconds to give MSU Moorhead its second conference win of the season.

PRESEASON NSIC POLL:
Southwest Minnesota State was picked to finish tied for seventh in the NSIC preseason poll.
