Mustangs' bats go quiet in home losses to Minnesota State

MARSHALL, Minn.- Southwest Minnesota State had just two hits in an 8-0 game one loss and just four hits in a 2-0 loss in game to against No. 14 Minnesota State at a windy Mustang Field on Tuesday afternoon.

Minnesota State starting pitcher, Coley Ries, struck out 11 batters in her six innings from the circle as the Mavericks won by run rule in six innings.

Shelby Crank suffered the loss for SMSU giving up four earned runs with three strikeouts on the afternoon.

Sam Flack extended her hitting streak to 11 games, going 1 for 2 in game one while Karmann Carroll also went 1 for 2.

The Mavericks scored two runs in both the first and third innings off of six total hits as the Mustangs offense remained mostly silent. MSU later doubled its lead with four unearned runs in the sixth inning off of two SMSU errors.

Trailing 8-0, the Mustangs were three up and three down in the bottom of the sixth to end the game by run rule in the second game vs. a ranked opponent so far this season for SMSU.

SMSU faced another seven innings of commanding pitching as Libby Bemis threw a second straight complete game shutout for Minnesota State with eight strikeouts.

Alex O'Connor suffered the loss for SMSU but also threw a complete game with seven strikeouts and just one earned run allowed.

The Mustangs managed just one hit through the first three innings and never put more than one hit together in a single inning during game two leaving six total runners on base.

O'Connor held the Mavericks scoreless through four innings but Minnesota State would break the deadlock with two runs off of three hits and two errors in the top of the fifth. Amber Kral had a base hit go past the Mustangs' outfielder which would end up scoring both runs following a throwing error from SMSU.

Sam Flack, who saw her 11-game hit streak come to an end in game two, reached base on a walk to lead off the seventh. Mackenzie Clouse then singled to left field to bring the potential winning run to the plate with runners on first and second and no outs. Bemis would put the finishing touches on her complete game however with a pop-up followed by back-to-back strikeouts to end the game.

The Mustangs will now hit the road as they enter the final stretch of their 2017 NSIC schedule with doubleheaders at Minnesota Duluth and St. Cloud State this Saturday and Sunday respectively.
