MARSHALL, Minn.- The top-ranked Southwest Minnesota State women's volleyball team (10-0, 2-0 NSIC) improved on the best start to a season in program history with a 25-16, 25-13, 25-15 sweep over No. 17 Wayne State (6-4, 1-1 NSIC) in the Mustangs home opener on Saturday afternoon in the PE Gym.
SMSU held Wayne State to a .079 hitting percentage as a team in the win, the second time this season the Mustangs have held the opponent under .100.
The Mustangs had seven total blocks on the afternoon as
Brooke Borchardt and
Taylor Reiss each had four block assists in the match.
Reiss led the Mustangs' attack with 14 kills on just 27 total attacks with just two errors (.444) and also added 14 digs on defense for SMSU.
The SMSU middles, Borchardt and freshman,
Sarina Smith, each had nine kills while
Kaylee Burmeister added another eight kills for the Mustangs.
Senior setter and all-time SMSUÂ career assists leader,
Megan Larson, had 39 assists and added three kills in addition to her six digs.
The Mustangs held Wayne State to .000 hitting in the first set and led the entire way to go up 1-0.
The Mustangs raced ahead to a 10-4 lead to begin the second set and never looked back, finishing with 17 kills and a .484 attack percentage as a team to go ahead 2-0.
After giving up a 2-0 lead in its last match at No. 9 Augustana, SMSUÂ never trailed in the final third set and held the Wildcats to just .065 hitting as the sweep never looked in doubt on Saturday afternoon.
SMSUÂ has now won four straight matches over Wayne State after winning all-three meetings against the Wildcats last season.
The win gives SMSU a 7-0 record against the AVCA's Top-25 teams so far this season and snaps a two-match losing streak in home openers for the Mustangs.
SMSU will face a quick turnaround as they return to the court on Tuesday night on the road at Sioux Falls, beginning at 6 p.m.Â
