No. 1 SMSU volleyball kicks off Homecoming Weekend with sweep over SCSU

MARSHALL, Minn.- No. 1 Southwest Minnesota State never trailed St. Cloud State in a match that the top team in the nation swept, 25-18, 25-15, 25-19, to tie the third longest win streak in school history on Friday night in the PE Gym.

The Mustangs held a third straight opponent under a .100 attack percentage as St. Cloud State finished just .092 on the night. SMSU finished the night with a .317 attack percentage including 20 kills with a .441 attack percentage as a team in the third set.

Brooke Borchardt led SMSU with 13 kills and a .522 attack percentage while the Mustangs' other middle blocker, Sarina Smith, added 11 kills and had five block assists.

Taylor Reiss moved into the top-10 in career kills in school history with 12 kills and six digs on the night with a .385 attack percentage. Reiss also added five block assists on the night.

Megan Larson had 42 assists and five digs in the win while Kayle Burmeister fell one kill shy of a double-double with nine kills in addition to 13 digs.

SMSU jumped ahead quickly as they raced to a 6-0 lead to begin the very first set. The Mustangs held St. Cloud State to just seven total kills as a team in the first set. The Huskies went on a 4-0 run to make the first game 23-18 when SMSU closed out the set with a kill from Kaylee Burmeister and a Huskies' attack error.

SMSU recovered from an inefficient first set offensively with a 15 kills and a .400 attack percentage as a group in the second set.  Brooke Borchardt added five kills in set two while Taylor Reiss had four kills on just six attacks with no errors to help the Mustangs go ahead 2-0 with a dominant 25-15 win in the second.

After the two teams traded points for the first tied score of the match early in set three, SMSU went on an 11-4 run to take control. The Mustangs finished with 20 kills as a team in the third set and a match high .441 attack percentage. SCSU fought off one match point to make the third set 24-19 before Brooke Borchardt posted her sixth kill of the set to finish off the sweep.

The Mustangs have now gone 19-1 against St. Cloud State during Head Coach, Terry Culhane's tenure with SMSU and have won 24 of 25 matches overall agaisnt the Huskies.

SMSU will look to improve on the best start to a season in school history on Saturday as they face No. 6 Minnesota Duluth at 2 p.m., in the PE Gym.
