The Last Time - SMSU vs. UMD
Blake Gimbel connected on a 14-yard touchdown pass to Ty Steffensen with 23 seconds remaining to help Southwest Minnesota State to a dramatic come-from-behind 42-38 victory over No. 19 Minnesota Duluth on Sept. 1, 2016, in Marshall. UMD held a 38-28 lead with five minutes left in the game, but SMSU rallied with a pair of touchdowns in the final three minutes and 11 seconds to earn its first-ever win over an NCAA Division II Top 25 team. Gimbel finished the night completing 25 of 42 pass attempts for 397 yards and tied a career-high with five touchdown passes.
Gabe Galamue caught six passes for 102 yards, while
Nate Huot finished with five receptions for 160 yards and one touchdown.
Ashanti Payne paced the Mustang rushing attack with 74 yards on 12 carries. UMD closed the game with 539 yards of offense, but was held to just 199 in the second half. UMD ran 83 plays compared to 61 for SMSU and held a 40:29 to 19:31 time of possession advantage. Darren Walker the Bulldogs with 154 yards rushing and one touchdown on 24 carries. Drew Bauer completed 19 of 33 pass attempts for 359 yards and two touchdowns.

SMSU EARNS ANOTHER BIG WIN OVER UMC
•SMSU pushed its winning streak to three in a row with a 55-6 victory over Minnesota Crookston on Saturday night Marshall.
•The Mustang defense forced six turnovers and also blocked a pair of field goal attempts.
•SMSU's
Daniel Davis led the way tying a school single-game record with four touchdown receptions, while catching a game-high six passes for 134 yards. •
Blake Gimbel completed 24 of 34 pass attempts for 280 yards and four touchdowns.
•SMSU closed the game with a season-high 548 yards offense and also set a season-high with 28 first downs.

DAVIS NAMED NSIC PLAYER OF THE WEEK
•Junior wide receiver
Daniel Davis was named the NSIC Offensive Player of the Week on Monday following his performance in SMSU's win over UMC.
•Davis tied the program single-game record with four touchdown receptions with scoring receptions of 18, 32, 19 and 30 yards. He finished the night with a game-high six receptions for 134 yards.
MUSTANG DEFENSE FORCING TURNOVERS
•SMSU has forced three or more turnovers in four of six games this season, including five in a week two loss to Wayne State and six in a win over Minnesota Crookston in week six.
•SMSU has forced 17 total turnovers which ranks third in Division II.
•SMSU forced 22 turnovers last season ranking 52nd in Division II.
•SMSU forced a turnover in 10 of 11 games last season and recorded two or more turnovers in seven games.
GIMBEL NAMED NSIC PLAYER OF THE WEEK
•Senior quarterback
Blake Gimbel was named the NSIC Offensive Player of the Week on Oct. 1 following his performance in a victory at UMary.
•Gimbel completed 21 of 31 passes for 356 yards and tied a career-high with five touchdown passes, while also rushing for a one-yard touchdown. He completed touchdown passes of 38, 64, 10, 18 and 16 yards—all in the first half—in helping SMSU earn its second straight victory.
•It is the fifth time in his career he has earned the weekly award.
DICKE RECOGNIZED FOR TWO MAJOR AWARDS
•Senior defensive tackle
Jon Dicke was recognized for two major awards last month for his work in the classroom and community.
•On Sept. 13, Dicke was named one of 22 college football players in the country named to the AFCA Allstate Good Works Team.
•The prestigious award, which has played a prominent role in collegiate sports for more than 25 years, celebrates student-athletes for their extraordinary commitment to making a lasting impact off the field.
•For his selection to the Good Works Team®, Dicke will be honored at halftime of the 2019 Allstate® Sugar Bowl® in New Orleans on Jan. 1, 2019.
•Dicke is the third Mustang football student-athlete to be selected to the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team in program history, joining Russ Barclay (1999) and Tyler Fischer (2007).
•On Sept. 26, he was named one of 179 semifinalist for the 2018 National Football Foundation & College Hall of Fame (NFF) William V. Campbell Trophy presented by Fidelity Investments.
•The NFF will announce 12-14 finalists on Oct. 31, and each of them will receive an $18,000 postgraduate scholarship as a member of the 60th NFF National Scholar-Athlete Class.
SMSU HEAD COACH
•
Cory Sauter is in his ninth season as head coach and has an overall record of 39-56, including 38-54 in conference games.
•Sauter's 39 victories rank second in program history among 10 head coaches.
•Sauter was named head coach on March 29, 2010, after serving two seasons as an assistant coach at SMSU.
•In 2009, Sauter served as the team's offensive coordinator, while in 2008 he served as quarterbacks coach.

•Several transfer players have made big impacts during their first season in Mustang uniforms.

Carter Kirk, a four-year standout for the SMSU men's basketball, is the team's starting tight end.

Connor Wilkie spent the first four seasons at SMSU as a quarterback, including making four starts a season ago.

DICKE NAMED 2017 ACADEMIC ALL-AMERICAN
•Senior defensive lineman
Jon Dicke was named a 2017 CoSIDA Academic All-American.
•Dicke is the 20th SMSU student-athlete in school history to earn CoSIDA Academic All-America® honors and just the seventh to earn first team accolades.
•He is the fifth SMSU football player to earn CoSIDA Academic All-American honors.
•Dicke carries a 4.0 cumulative GPA in exercise science.
NEY RETURNING ALL-NSIC PLAYER
•Senior linebacker
Alex Ney is the only returning player that earned All-NSIC South Division honors following the 2017 season. He was named All-NSIC South honorable mention.
•Ney led the team last season with 120 tackles and also ranked first with 60 solo stops.
•Ney became just the second Mustang to reach 100 tackles in season since 2007 and the first since 2013. The 120 tackles is the seventh highest total in team single-season history and also ranked 13th in Division II in tackles per game.
GIMBEL RETURNS AT QUARTERBACK
•The 2018 SMSU offense returns sixth-year senior quarterback
Blake Gimbel, who missed nearly all of last season with injury. An All-NSIC South honorable mention honoree in 2015 and 2016, Gimbel started the first four games last season, but was injured late in week two and played just a few series in the third and fourth games of the season.
•Gimbel finished the 2016 season ranked fourth in the conference in passing and ninth in total offense, while ranking third in Division II in completion percentage, fourth in completions per game, 21st in passing yards and 32nd in passing touchdowns.

Blake Gimbel ranks first in school history in completing percentage (66.2), first in completions (809), second in passing touchdowns (74) and second in passing yards (8,754).

Max Simmons ranks third in team history with 26 rushing touchdowns and is also tied for seventh in total touchdowns (30) and 11th in rushing yards (1,767).
•Simmons' 18 rushing touchdowns in 2016 rank second in team single-season history.
•The 18 rushing touchdowns was a school single-season record for rushing touchdowns by a freshman.
•Simmons also twice tied the school single-game record for rushing touchdowns (4) during the 2016 season at Minnesota Crookston and at Winona State.

•Since being shutout on Nov. 5, 2011, Southwest Minnesota State has scored 30 or more points in 35 of its last 74 games dating back to the final game of the 2011 season.
•Since Nov. 12, 2011, SMSU has scored 40 or more points 21 times, 50 or more points 11 times and 60 or more points once.
•SMSU hasn't been as prolific scoring in the last two-plus seasons, having reached the 30-point plateau just three times in its last 21 games since Oct. 20, 2016, but have reached the mark in the last two weeks in wins over UMary and Minnesota Crookston.
•SMSU scored 51 points in a win over MSU Moorhead in week two last season, scored 54 in two weeks ago at UMary and 55 last week versus Minnesota Crookston.
