MARSHALL, Minn. – Megan Cull recorded a career-high 11 strikeouts and tossed her fourth complete game of the season to lead Southwest Minnesota State to a 4-2 victory over Minnesota Duluth in game one of a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference softball doubleheader on Monday at the Schwan Regional Event Center. UMD rebounded for a 4-1 victory in game two to earn the split.

UMD, which is ranked No. 3 in this past week's NCAA Central Region rankings, is now 34-9 overall, 16-4 NSIC. SMSU pushes its record to 11-22 overall, 6-12 NSIC.

Cull (3-8) allowed just five hits and two unearned runs in snapping UMD's 11-game winning streak. She finished the game tossing 126 pitches with 88 for strikes.

SMSU pushed across the first run of the game in the bottom of the second as
Alex Reak laid down a perfect sac bunt to score
Kaylee Hentges.

The Mustangs added to the lead in the third on an RBI double by Hentges to score
Kali Tomlinson.
Madison Krog moments later followed with a two-run single to score Hentges and Tomlinson and push the lead to 4-0.

The run support was enough for Cull who only allowed a pair of unearned runs in the fifth inning.

SMSU closed the game with six hits with
Bailey Johnson finishing 2 for 3 with a run scored.

In game two, UMD opened the scoring with an unearned run in the first, but SMSU answered in the home half of the second on a solo home run from Hentges.

UMD went back out in front in the fourth taking advantage of a Mustang fielding error to score another unearned run and take a 2-1 lead.

The Bulldogs picked up a pair of big insurance runs in the seventh inning on a two-run, two-out single by Jordyn Thomas to build a 4-1 advantage.

Valerie Hohol fired a complete game three-hitter for UMD with five strikeouts and one walk.

Athena Golling (3-8) was outstanding as she recorded a career-high 11 strikeouts, while allowing four runs (two earned) on six hits with three walks.

Hentges led the Mustang offense in game two with a 2 for 3 performance.

Southwest Minnesota State continues its homestand on Wednesday facing Wayne State College at 2 p.m. at the Schwan Regional Event Center.
