SMSU triumphs in road-match at Minnesota State

MANKATO, Minn.
– The Southwest Minnesota State volleyball team triumphed in a four-set victory over Minnesota State on Friday night at the Taylor Center.
 
SMSU (10-4, 5-1 NSIC) defeated Minnesota State (10-4, 3-3 NSIC) after falling in the first set, 25-22.
 
Taylor Reiss recorded a team-best and match-high 30 kills with 14 digs on the night. Angela Young also added 14 kills in tonight's victory. Erin Corrigan led the team in digs with 19, and Emma Thomssen paced the Mustangs with 57 kills.
 
MSU took an early 10-3 lead before the Mustangs tied the set at 13-13. The Mavericks went on a 5-0 run led by three consecutive kills to take a five-point lead to go up 18-13. The Mustangs made it a one-point set to make it 19-18 before the Mavericks pulled ahead to take set 1, 25-22.
 
The Mustangs took a 11-5 lead in the second set after four consecutive kills, three from Meg Schmidt. The Mustangs capitalized on their lead with three kills from Reiss to advance the lead to 19-8. Reiss accounted for five more kills to drive the Mustangs to a 25-13 set victory.
 
Mustangs went on a early 4-0 run in the third set to take a 9-3 lead. The Mustangs held so much as a nine-point lead before the Mavericks closed in on the Mustangs at 21-15 with three consecutive kills from Alivia Garbe. The Mavericks came within five points at 23-17, before Reiss inevitably ended the set with two kills.
 
Neither team took a greater lead than three in set four. The Mavericks trailed 23-22 before Meg Schmidt ended the match with two consecutive kills.
 
Southwest Minnesota State (10-4, 5-1 NSIC) travels to Concordia-St. Paul (12-2, 6-0 NSIC) on Saturday for a 2 p.m. match at Gangelhoff Center
