Mustangs travel to Minnesota Crookston and top-ranked Bemidji for a road series weekend

CROOKSTON, Minn. - The Southwest Minnesota State women's soccer team travels to Minnesota Crookston on Friday for a match at 3 p.m. and takes on Bemidji State at 1 p.m on Sunday for a road series weekend. SMSU went 0-2 last weekend in its home opening matches as the Mustangs fell 2-1 last Friday against Northern State and 1-0 shutout on Sunday against MSU Moorhead. Abbey Hoisington scored her third career goal against Northern State to account for the only Mustang goal of the weekend. Hoisington led with four shots, all on goal. 

Mustang Notes
Last Friday, SMSU fell 2-1 to Northern State. Hoisington scored in the first ten minutes of the game and the Mustangs maintained the lead until late in the second half when the Wolves were able to score two unanswered goals. On Sunday, the Dragons from MSU Moorhead and the Mustangs resulted in a scoreless first half before Dragons scored the only goal of the game in the second half. The Mustangs were unable to respond after seven set piece attempts. 

Mustangs are led by Alli Miskowiec, who has recorded three goals this season, all scored in her hat-trick against Sioux Falls on Sept. 7. Abbey Hoisington also has accounted for three goals, one a piece against Sioux Falls, Wayne State, and Northern State. Miskowiec has recorded 16 shots, nine on goal whereas Hoisington adds 18 shots, 13 on goal.

Mustang goalkeeper Jenna Meyer made her season debut on Sunday against MSU Moorhead. She recorded three saves in the Mustangs' 1-0 loss. Jessica Craigmile maintains a 2-4-0 record as SMSU's primary goalkeeper. She has recorded 47 saves in 111 shots faced.

Opponent at a glance
Minnesota Crookston - UMC is 1-6-1 overall and 1-3-1 in the conference. Maggee Hodgdon leads the Golden Eagles with three goals and 11 shots this season. Goalkeeper for the Golden Eagles, Olivia Putton, leads with 56 saves and a 0-4-0 record and Athena DiMario Done also adds 30 saves and a 1-1-1 record. The Golden Eagles won their last match against Upper Iowa on Sept. 23 in a shutout 1-0 victory, their first of the season. Hogdgon scored the game winning goal with two seconds left.

Series History - SMSU leads the series 18-3-1 with a 9-2-1 away record. The Mustangs snapped a four-game winning streak on Oct. 23, 2016 with a 1-0 shutout. Previously, the Mustangs had won 17 of the last 20 games. SMSU won 1-0 in the last meeting on Oct. 10, 2017 in Marshall.

Bemidji State - No. 12 leads the conference and is undefeated this season with a 8-0 overall record and 5-0 in the conference. Rachael Norton leads the Beavers with eight goals scored off 37 shots, 22 of them on goal. Allyson Smith adds five goals ad Dani Nelson adds four. Bemidji State defeated Winona State 2-0 in a road match shutout. Norton and Smith each accounted for a goal.


Series History - SMSU leads the series 11-8-4 with a draw away record (6-6). The Mustangs opened the series which began on Sept. 25, 1996 with a 4-2 win to spark a eight-game winning streak. The streak ended on Sept. 24, 2005 with a 4-2 loss in Bemidji. Since that game, the Mustangs are 3-7-4. The Mustangs fell 4-1 in the last match on Oct. 22, 2017 at Marshall. 

Southwest Minnesota State (2-5, 2-3 NSIC) returns home next weekend for homecoming matches against Minnesota State (5-1-1, 3-0-1 NSIC) on Friday at 3 p.m. and concludes the weekend hosting Concordia-St. Paul (5-0-2, 2-0-2 NSIC) on Sunday at 1 p.m.
