Strong start for the Mavericks earn victory over the Mustangs on Friday afternoon

MARSHALL, Minn. – The Southwest Minnesota State soccer team (6-3, 4-3 NSIC) braved the elements on Friday afternoon in Mankato as Minnesota State (8-2, 5-2 NSIC) claimed a 5-1 victory.
 
MSU's first two goals were scored by Jenny Vetter, her sixth and seventh goals of the season. Vetter started the scoring off in the 13th minute, assisted by Anna Mixon and followed up in the 20th minute, with an unassisted goal. 
 
MSU then advanced the lead in the first half yet with a goal in the 31st minute by Allie Williams, assisted by Brooke Valiukas, and a goal in the 34th minute by Abbey Begin, assisted by Williams. 
 
The Mavericks out-shot the Mustangs in the first half alone, 17-2. 
 
The Mustangs opened the second half to go on the board with a goal from Alli Miskowiec, her fourth of the season, assisted by Abbey Hoisington. 
 
The Mavericks, however, connected on the fifth goal of the game in the 71st minute by Sydney Deprenger, assisted by Williams, her second assist of the night. 
 
The Mavericks finished with 22 shots, 12 of them on goal while SMSU finished with nine shots, five on goal. 

SMSU goalkeeper Amanda Haimes played all 90 minutes to record a season-high seven saves as her record drops to 6-3. 
 
Southwest Minnesota State (6-3, 4-3 NSIC) travels to No. 22 Concordia-St. Paul on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Seafoam Stadium to conclude weekend play.
