SMSU rolls to weekend sweep with four-set victory over UMC

MARSHALL, Minn. –
No. 12 Southwest Minnesota State (13-6, 7-4 NSIC) finished a weekend sweep over Minnesota Crookston (4-15, 2-9)  with a four-set victory on Saturday afternoon in the PE Gym.

Angela Young led the match with 26 kills, a career-high, from the junior outside hitter. Young and the Mustangs accounted for a .425 hitting percentage in the four-set victory (25-13, 25-17, 25-27, 25-14).

Jenna Walczak added the offensive 15 kills while Zoe Lier and Meg Schmidt each added 12.

A big match for experienced Mustang setter, Emma Thomssen, who finished with 45 assists, nine digs, and two kills.

On the defensive end, Payton Hjerleid led the way with 19 digs while Erin Corrigan finished with 12 and Young dug up 11.

UMC was led offensively by Porsha Porath who finished the match with 12 in UMC's .208-mark match.

The Mustangs strong offense started in the first set to total .441 in the opening set. The Mustangs took set one and two without every relinquishing the lead until the third set when the Golden Eagles came back to battle for a 27-25 set three victory.

The fierce Mustangs came back in set four to record a match-high .457 hitting percentage to finish the match with a 25-14 victory.

Southwest Minnesota State will prepare for a tough road-series against conference top-teams with matches at St. Cloud State on Friday at 6 p.m. in Halenbeck Hall before traveling to Minnesota Duluth on Saturday at 4 p.m. in the Romano Gymnasium. The Mustangs finish a three-match week off with a match on Thursday, Oct. 31 at Sioux Falls at 6 p.m. in the Stewart Center.
