MARSHALL, Minn. – To earn its second shutout of the weekend and to advance the winning streak to four games, the Southwest Minnesota State soccer team (10-6, 8-6 NSIC) defeated Upper Iowa (3-10-4, 3-8-3 NSIC) with a 4-0 final on Sunday at the Schwan Regional Event Center.
With the victory, SMSU clinches a spot in the eight-team NSIC Tournament which begins on Nov. 13. It will be SMSU's first appearance in the tournament since 2015.
Alli Miskowiec led the game with two goals and two assists. Miskowiec, who earned NSIC Offensive Player of the Week on Monday, scored her ninth and tenth goals in the 29th minute and the 82nd. Miskowiec finished with four shots, three of them on goal, and two assists. Miskowiec now ranks fourth in SMSU history with goals scored in her career with 24.
Miskowiec's first goal put the Mustangs on the board in the 29th minute, assisted by Abbey Hoisington. Hoisington, who was the lone scorer for the Mustangs on Friday in a 1-0 shutout of Winona, then came right back in the 34th minute for a goal of her own, assisted by Miskowiec. Hoisington's goal was her fifth of the season.
SMSU would then come out in the second half with the same intensity as Erin Fisher broke away down the middle of the field to send the ball past the defender for her fourth goal of the season, assisted by Miskowiec, in the 57th minute.
To secure the victory, Miskowiec connected for the last time of regulation in the 82nd minute, assisted this time by Jessica Jugovich.
With one game of the regular season remaining, SMSU currently sits sixth in the conference with 24 points.
SMSU's goalkeeper Amanda Haimes advanced her record to 10-6 with her second shutout of the weekend, her sixth overall this season. The true freshman has played all minutes this season with seven saves in the game today.
Southwest Minnesota State plays the final game of the regular season at the Schwan Regional Event Center on Friday at 5 p.m., hosting Sioux Falls.
