Wildcats sweep Mustangs in midweek match-up

MARSHALL, Minn.
– The No. 18 Southwest Minnesota State volleyball team (14-10, 8-8 NSIC) fell in three sets to No. 13 Wayne State (20-5, 11-5 NSIC) on Tuesday night in a midweek battle in the PE Gym.

Jenna Walczak and Angela Young led the way for the Mustangs with seven kills each. The Mustangs hit .075 with 34 kills while the Wildcats hit .165 and 34 kills, led by Kelsie Cada who finished with 11.

WSC's Rachel Walker paced the Wildcats with 29 assists while SMSU was paced by the combined efforts of Emma Thomssen and Alisa Bengen who finished with 15 and 10 each.

The Wildcats opened the match to jump to an early 7-1 lead, which would sail to a 25-18 set one victory. WSC kept the same momentum in set two despite a three-point push late to rally with the Wildcats at set-point, before WSC's Tarrin Beller, who finished with six kills, ended the set 25-21.

In set three, the Wildcats rallied from a 20-19 disadvantage to come back and end the set on four straight points for the match victory.

Southwest Minnesota State will travel to Northern State on Friday at 7 p.m. at the Wachs Arena and will close out the final road series of the season with a 4 p.m. match at MSU Moorhead in Nemez Fieldhouse.
