SMSU's hot-hitting continues with sweep over WSC

WAYNE, Neb.– The Southwest Minnesota State softball team (15-17, 10-10 NSIC) swept Wayne State College (10-27, 1-19 NSIC) with an 8-0 shutout in five innings in game one and a 5-2 victory in game two at Pete Chapman Complex in Wayne, Neb., on Tuesday afternoon. 
 
The Mustangs broke a 10-game losing streak yesterday with a sweep over MSU Moorhead. With today's victory, SMSU began a four-game winning streak. 
 
Game One
 
SMSU broke the game open in the top of the third as Sara DeSmet started off the inning with a solo homer to left center to put the first run on the board. 
 
The Mustangs strung together six hits including DeSmet's homerun, a two-RBI single from Bailey Johnson, a double from Kali Tomlinson, a single from Alex Reak, and two singles from Emma Grote
 
The Mustangs then capped off their second shutout in two days earning another run in the top of the fourth as Reak hit a sac fly to right field to score Johnson. 
 
Johnson (3-of-4) led the Mustangs with two RBIs while Reak went 2-of-2 at the plate. 
 
Athena Golling tossed all five innings with four strikeouts. In back-to-back appearances this week, Golling let a runner come home. 
 
Game Two 
 
The Wildcats looked to get an early lead as UMC's Emily Chandler hit a two-run homerun over the center field fence to take an early 2-0 lead. 
 
The Mustangs responded in the top of the third stringing together a couple of singles from Kaylee Hentges and Grote. 
 
SMSU looked to catch up to UMC as the Mustangs loaded the bases but UMC made a play at home to tag out Kristen Neumann, pitch runner for Reak to end the inning with three runners left on the bags. 
 
SMSU returned in the top of the fifth with a two-out solo homer from Tomlinson to tie the game at 2-2. 
 
The Mustangs took advantage of the top of the seventh as the Eagles walked six runners to bring three runs for SMSU. 
 
Shelby Crank picked up her second victory this season throwing all seven innings, allowing only one walk and five strikeouts. 
 
Southwest Minnesota State travels to UMary on Friday for a 1 and 3 p.m. doubleheader honoring pediatric cancer awareness. SMSU closes the weekend off with a twinbill at Minot State at 12 and 2 p.m.
